October 11th Pre-Conference Meeting

Posted on October 11, 2012

ADAO is in France! It is easy to forget my jetlag today, because I am surrounded by people from all over the world who have dedicated their lives to helping people impacted by asbestos disease.

Tonight, I was thrilled to join 30 speakers and volunteers at a dinner meeting prior to the French National Association of Asbestos Victims’ (ANDEVA) “International Day for Asbestos Victims” Conference tomorrow and “A World without Asbestos” demonstration on Saturday.  More than 250 delegates will attend tomorrow’s conference, and about 5,000 will participate in Saturday’s demonstration.

Dr. Richard Lemen, Dr. Barry Castleman and I have been invited to present tomorrow, and we are thrilled to be here! Tomorrow morning, Dr. Lemen will present on the epidemiology of asbestos disease. In the afternoon, Dr. Castleman will lead a roundtable discussion with experts from all over the world.  I am honored to present new information about America’s deadly asbestos legacy in a session entitled “Asbestos: Still Legal and Lethal in the U.S.”

All of the presentations will be translated simultaneously into French, Spanish, Italian and English.  The conference agenda is impressive. Several scientists, doctors, NGO activists, and individuals personally impacted by asbestos will present on the status of asbestos regulations, disease prevention efforts, and victim compensation in countries throughout the world.

I will write another blog after the conference, so please check back with us next week for more details about the sessions we attend. Remember, you are here with me and together, change is possible.

In unity,
