To introduce you to our extraordinary ADAO “The Asbestos Crisis: New Trends in Prevention and Treatment”  conference speakers, ADAO is featuring a weekly Meet the Speaker blog! This week, meet Captain Aubrey K. Miller, M.D., M.P.H., who is delivering a keynote address at the 2013 conference.

Captain Aubrey K. Miller, M.D., M.P.H., is currently Senior Medical Advisor, Office of the Director, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH).  He has responsibility for strategic planning and coordination of environmental health issues and activities among HHS and other federal agencies, as well as supervisory oversight of the NIEHS office in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Miller has longstanding experience, publications, and contributions to a wide range of occupational and environmental health issues and policies. He has had extensive involvement in the Gulf Oil Spill response providing testimonies before US Senate and House Committees on the health concerns of environmental exposures and coordinating a variety of ongoing programmatic and research activities. Some of his other focus areas include hydraulic fracturing, disaster response, and emerging threats (e.g., Hurricane Sandy, H1N1 pandemic, anthrax attacks, Hurricane Katrina, and WTC response).  Additionally, Dr. Miller has longstanding involvement with asbestos issues & hazardous mineral fibers; helping to lead the federal response to the asbestos contamination in Libby, Montana; assessing health effects, exposures, national investigations and public health alerts, and facilitating improved access to health care for members of  the Libby community.  He is also working on newly identified concerns related to erionite exposures in the U.S.

His previous positions include: Chief Medical Officer for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Counterterrorism and Emerging Threats; Senior Medical Officer and Regional Toxicologist for EPA Region 8; Medical Director for Emergencies & Disasters, HHS Office of the Secretary in Denver; and a Medical Officer for the CDC, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Dr. Miller received his M.D. from Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois and his M.P.H. in Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences from the University of Illinois, School of Public Health. He also completed the CDC Epidemiology Intelligence Service (EIS) Fellowship Program. He is a member of the American Public Health Association, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and Society of Toxicology.
