“The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) deeply mourns the loss of our beloved United Kingdom Mesothelioma Warrior, Jan, who passed away on January 23, 2014 after a nearly ten-year courageous battle with mesothelioma. Despite her illness, Jan was determined to “carry on enjoying my life with my husband and dogs” and  was “on a mission to live as long as possible” to have more time with them. Her spirit touched us all with its beautiful light and even now her memory, love, and inspirational story lingers, warming our hearts and fueling our fight.

Jan’s courage and perseverance shone through her illness like a beacon touching and inspiring all that knew her. Her story, “My Life Battling Mesothelioma”empowered patients and families around the world reminding us all of the horrors of asbestos related diseases as well as the strength and power in the human spirit.  The ADAO community was deeply moved by her dedication to supporting fellow Meso Warriors around the world and we are forever grateful for her light, love, and story.

Although Jan struggled she never was selfish in her life or her fight. She provided a much needed shoulder for support for all who needed it and her blog showcased how much she cared for other asbestos victims: “If I can help with any queries on treatments, or you just want someone to rant to, then please use the above email address. If I can help you I will, otherwise I may pass you to another Meso Circle friend who could help you. “Don’t be alone in this battle. We are all here to help each other…” Jan’s message will continue to ring true – we must stand together against asbestos, fighting in unity for justice for all the victims and their families.

Jan was the author of  “The DreamWeaver’s Choice,” published in 2013 and donated some of the proceeds from her book to the British Lung Foundation Mesothelioma Tissue Bank.   Jan shared her innermost feelings with us on Facebook and Twitter too, especially in her recent blog, “Mesothelioma Warrior Envisions Her Last Goodbye.”

ADAO grieves with Jan’s husband Gary, family and friends. As Jan herself wrote:  ‘How do we describe something that is going to take us away from the life we love?’ Asbestos devastates victims, families and communities, and ADAO will continue to seek to prevent this senseless destruction from occurring to others. As I am drying my tears, I am looking into our future, to a world where there is a complete and total ban of asbestos and no one has to know the pain Jan and so many of us have felt.” We will not let Jan’s memory or story be forgotten, her light will live on forever strengthening the beating of our hearts and the volume of our voices in this global fight against asbestos.”

With sadness,
