PRESS RELEASE: ADAO President to Testify before U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works as Part of Expert Panel Addressing Toxic Chemical Threats

Linda Reinstein Testimony: “Strengthening Public Health Protections by Addressing Toxic Chemical Threats”

Posted on August 1, 2013

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) was honored to testify today, Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 9:30 AM EDT before the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW) as part of an expert panel during a full committee hearing entitled, “Strengthening Public Health Protections by Addressing Toxic Chemical Threats.”

The hearing examined the need for Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) reform to protect public health, our families, and our environment from chemicals. There were three panels and a total of 19 experts who testified including Michael Troncoso (Senior Counsel, Office of the Attorney General), Ken Cook (President and Co-founder, Environmental Working Group), Daniel Rosenberg (Senior Attorney, Natural Resource Defense Council), and additional national experts on public health and the environment. ADAO thanks Chairman Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., for holding the hearing and remaining dedicated to addressing the public’s concerns with TSCA. We are pleased with bipartisan support, but the Chemical Safety Improvement Act as written fails to protect the health of Americans. Congress should draft and pass meaningful chemical safety reform legislation that truly strengthens protections for our families and environment by preventing the further use of asbestos.

ADAO continued our longtime tradition of honoring Mesothelioma Warriors by dedicating our briefing to Janelle, Michael, and their families. I was also delighted to deliver over 2,500 Ban Asbestos petition supporter signatures to Congress as part of my testimony. Please continue to sign and share our ban asbestos, save lives petition – with each new signature, our voice gets stronger and harder to ignore.

Together, change is possible.

Linda
