Each year, Australians dedicate the last week in November to asbestos awareness, education, and remembrance to those who have lost their lives from preventable asbestos-caused diseases.
Even though all six forms of asbestos have been banned in Australia, asbestos-related diseases continue to increase. With home renovations and DIY projects, deadly asbestos fibers are left to linger in the air and cause life-threatening health effects upon inhalation, especially by those who have not taken precautions to protect themselves. Even the smallest amount of asbestos dust can be lethal – it is crucial to be aware of the dangers and the proper protection methods.

Australia continues to lead the global ban asbestos movement by example, especially through their strong legislative regulations and exemplary educational campaign efforts. The use of all forms of asbestos has been banned in Australia since 2003. In 2013, Australian delegates urged the Rotterdam Convention, a multilateral treaty in which nations around the world share responsibility for safe handling of imported hazardous chemicals, to add chrysotile asbestos to the Prior Informed Consent list.
This year, ADAO will feature six Australian “Share Your Stories” each day of the week and conclude with a candle light vigil.

Sunday-November 30: Today there will be a special candle light vigil honoring Mesothelioma Warriors around the world to close Australia Asbestos Awareness Week. Please join us in lighting a candle and sharing your story.
After the groundbreaking, government-sponsored ASEA Conference in Melbourne last week, ADAO is honored to observe Australia Asbestos Awareness Week in support of Australia’s exemplary asbestos awareness efforts. ADAO admires and supports Australia’s ongoing commitment to asbestos education and advocacy to protect public health both nationally and globally.
