The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is proud to present a new weekly series” Meet the Speakers, Honorees, and Leadership,” highlighting one or several attendees at our highly-anticipated 11th Annual International Asbestos Awareness Conference!  The ADAO Conference, which will take place on April 17-19, 2015 in Washington, DC, combines over 30 expert opinions, victims’ stories, and new technological advancements from more than 10 countries into one united voice raised for asbestos awareness.  ADAO is the only U.S. nonprofit that organizes annual conferences dedicated solely to preventing exposure and eliminating asbestos-caused diseases.  Register today!  This week, we are featuring our amazing conference Honorees: American Public Health Association (APHA), Troi Atkinson, The Brazilian Labour Public Ministry, International Mesothelioma Interest Group (iMig), Ellen Patton Dr. Jorma RantanenSlide 1

American Public Health Association (APHA) will receive the Tribute of Unity Award. Since 1872, APHA has been a champion for the health of all people and all communities. Their mission is to improve the health of the public and achieve equity in health status through speaking out for public health issues and policies backed by science. APHA also publishes the American Journal of Public Health and The Nation’s Health newspaper. Amy Liebman will be accepting the award on behalf of APHA.

Troi Atkinson,  will be honored with the Warren Zevon “Keep me in Your Heart” Award. Troi is a talented musician who started off his root seeking life in the Deep South. A mesothelioma warrior himself, is also an ADAO Ambassador and strives to increase asbestos and mesothelioma awareness.

The Brazilian Labour Public Ministry will be presented with the Tribute of Inspiration Award.The State Attorney has functional, administrative, and financial autonomy and is the legal juridical guardian of the democratic system, protects individual citizen’s inalienable interests, and monitors compliance to Brazilian Law. The Labour Prosecutor’s Office (LPO) is the branch of the State Attorney (USA) that has the task to supervise the compliance with labor when there is public interest, seeking to regulate and mediate relations between employees and employers. It is up to LPO promote civil action under Justice Labour to defend collective interests when occurs violations of social rights constitutionally guaranteed to workers. Dr. Luis Antonio Camargo De Melo will be accepted the award on behalf of The Brazilian Labour Public Ministry.

International Mesothelioma Interest Group (iMig) will be presented with the Tribute of Hope Award. iMig was founded in 1991 with the goals of holding an international mesothelioma conference, improve collaboration by generating a list of available resources, produce a newsletter for members on a regular basis, and foster international interest groups to address specific issues of importance. Professor Dean Fennell, current President of iMig will be accepting the award on behalf of the interest group.

Ellen Patton, will be recognized with the Alan Reinstein Award. In 2001, at 41 years old, Ellen was diagnosed with bilateral malignant pleural mesothelioma. She has bravely fought with an alternative treatment option, immune therapy and is a very positive inspirational person. For years she has been committed education, advocacy, and support for countless patients and families.

Dr. Jorma Rantanen will be recognized with the Dr. Irving Selikoff Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Jorma Rantanen, MD, PhD, Professor at International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH), is a specialist in occupational health and served for 30 years as the Director General of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, FIOH and has worked tirelessly to increase awareness about eliminating asbestos disease.
