2015 Mesothelioma Action Day Speech, “I Obtained Mesothelioma by Washing My Husbands Clothes” by Mavis Nye

Mesothelioma Action DayThank you to everyone who shared their support for the London Hazards Centre’s Mesothelioma Action Day this past July 3rd in London!  The event brought together mesothelioma victims, occupational health and safety leaders, unions, medical and scientific experts, and concerned citizens for awareness and action. Overall, everyone present was eager to learn more, support the cause, and advocate against asbestos.

ADAO was thrilled to have been invited to speak to this enthusiastic international audience on the theme of the day: “Banned but not gone: all asbestos causes cancer.” The event provided not only an excellent opportunity to share information, but also to meet with other presenters at the event. In fact, our presentation was followed by that of Gail Cartmail, the Assistant General Secretary of Unite the Union, which focuses on campaigning for better terms and conditions for union members in the construction, energy, finance, and public service sectors.

And, while this was a very important and impactful event, the benefits of our short time in London didn’t end there. As we continued our advocacy in the United Kingdom, we had the opportunity to meet with leading health and safety organization to expand collaborative efforts.

It’s clear from the event’s turnout that the time is here for action. Let’s keep up the spirit of Mesothelioma Action Day close as we continue to fight to end the asbestos man-made disaster with prevention and a cure.

Special thanks to Phil Lewis, the dedicated London Hazards Centre’s team, and sponsors who made this day possible.

Together, we are making change happen.
