It’s an honor for ADAO to support Earl’s important and powerful  “BADGES: A Memorial Tribute to Asbestos Workers” a photography exhibit.  Please view and share the tour schedule below.

ADAO 11th Annual Meeting Exhibit Poster CORRECTED FINAL VERSION - #2 - RESIZEDThe completed version of this exhibit that first appeared at the 2015 ADAO Conference and will again be on display at the 12th Annual 12th Annual International Asbestos Awareness and Prevention Conference in Washington, DC on April 8-10, 2016. The theme of the conference is: “Where Action and Knowledge Unite.” What makes this exhibit come to life for the next annual meeting are three significant additions that will enhance our knowledge and inform our action toward enacting an asbestos ban worldwide.

Last year the photographic display at our conference had a few empty panels on the reverse side of the exhibit. With the contribution of historic 1949-50 Johns-Manville manufacturing images, from Tony Rich, a long time ADAO member, Earl Dotter has been able to add a significant photo essay showing J-M workers at their jobs being exposed to asbestos at the Waukegan, Illinois plant. Earl restored these faded photographs that now show the exposure J-M employees experienced in a vivid photo essay series in the lighted display.

This year the exhibit adds a panel of Kent cigarette ads from 1952-56. The “Micronite” filter in these cigarettes contained blue asbestos that was manufactured by the P. Lorillard Company. The manufacturer was compelled to test if asbestos was being released by the filter in 1956. Once testing confirmed asbestos exposure to smokers using this brand, the asbestos was no longer included in the Micronite filters after 1957. Unfortunately, this was after many consumers were seriously harmed by inhaling the fibers imbedded in the Kent filter.

Finally, a wider selection of employee ID badges are included in the exhibit from companies that mined, manufactured or used asbestos products.

At this point, Earl Dotter is actively seeking Employee Photo ID Work Badges from your loved ones or friends that have documented work and health histories associated with particular badges from your family or friends. If you have such badges, please contact Earl via Earl@asbestosdiseaseawareness.org.  He will explain how to make a careful scan of your badge(s) and tell you how the photo of the badge might be used in the exhibit combined with a short work and health history of the individual pictured in the badge.
