Celebrating Social Media Day June 30As a huge believer in the power of social media, ADAO encourages you to join us in celebrating the seventh annual Social Media Day celebration on June 30, 2016. Founded in 2010 by Mashable, a global leader in multi-platform tech and entertainment content, Social Media Day is intended to shine a spotlight on the digital revolution that continues to unfold before our eyes. People across the globe connect to celebrate Social Media Day each year on June 30, both digitally and IRL (that’s “in real life” for you social media newbies).

In our ever-changing world, technological advancements have dramatically changed the way we connect, share, and do business. Today, the internet has 3.17 billion users and 2.3 billion are active on social media. As internet proliferation and social media participation grow, the power of social media messaging is greater than ever before. Whether to spread information to a broader audience, tell a more compelling story, encourage grassroots action, or coordinate events, social media has allowed organizations to communicate messages more efficiently and effectively, growing their audience in the process.

ADAO is extremely grateful for the advent and mass adoption of social media because it has allowed us, as a small, lean nonprofit, to take action, share information, and be heard! From the day that my daughter, Emily, created ADAO’s first Facebook page, our organization has embraced social media as a means of connecting and sharing. Tools such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn allow us to post educational content, organize campaigns, mobilize for action, honor Mesothelioma Warriors, and much more – and push it all to an exponentially larger global audience with nothing more than the click of a button. From launching campaigns like Global Asbestos Awareness Week to pushing policy change with the recently passed Toxic Substances Control Act Reform to building a community through the courageous and touching Share Your Stories collection, social media has made ADAO’s work possible.

With a Klout score of 69, ADAO ranks fourth in the Health and Safety Top 500 active Twitter users. Social media advocacy is something that ADAO organically produces and uses to propel our important message to the world. If we had to rely on mailer pamphlets or expensive ad campaigns, ADAO would never have been able to realize the level of effect we’ve made using social media.

Today is a great day to remember all that has changed since the introduction of social media and appreciate what it has allowed us and other nonprofits to accomplish!  Join the global Social Media Day conversation by:

  • Using the #SMday hashtag on Twitter, Instagram, Google+ or any other social network of your choice.
  • Attending meetups in your city
  • Connecting with the Mashable Meetup Organizers group on Facebook and host your own event if one’s not already planned for your city.
  • Following @MashableEvents on Twitter for #SMDay updates.

By getting connected, we are making change HAPPEN!
