Dr. LemenPosted on November 28, 2016

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is fortunate to have phenomenal physicians, scientists, and asbestos professionals on our Science and Advisory Prevention Boards. I am so proud to share new research from ADAO Science Advisory Board Co-Chair Dr. Lemen, who exemplifies the expertise of ADAO’s team.

The paper, titled “Mesothelioma from asbestos exposures: Epidemiologic patterns and impact in the United States,” was recently published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental HealthDr. Lemen’s paper examines the demographical, etiological and epidemiological nature of asbestos-related mesothelioma. In the conclusion, Dr. Lemen writes, “Thus, as NIOSH concluded in 1976, ‘only a ban can assure protection against carcinogenic effects of asbestos’.”

Dr. Lemen is a former Assistant Surgeon General of the United States and also served as the Acting Director and the Deputy Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health before his retirement. He has been a practicing epidemiologist for more than 45 years and has taught graduate level courses on environmental and occupational health issues, including asbestos, at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. He has also testified as an expert witness on behalf of asbestos victims; Dr. Lemen is a world-renowned author, teacher, and lecturer on this topic having just returned from Italy where he received the Irving J. Selikoff Award for his lifetime of work in promoting worker’s safety and health throughout the world.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Lemen on this newly published work, and thanking him for all he does for the ADAO family.

In unity,

Linda
