SRCAA

Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency and the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization

Posted on February 10, 2017

Team ADAO has just returned from a very exciting business trip with news I’m so proud to share with you!

As I shared a couple of months ago, ADAO was sought out by the Assistant Attorney General of Washington State to be the recipient of a restitution award stemming from an asbestos lawsuit in Spokane. Translated from legalese, this means a company who recklessly exposed workers to asbestos was forced to contribute money specifically to fund asbestos awareness and education efforts.

We’re so excited to partner with the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency (SRCAA) in the design, development, and launch of this project.  In addition to SRCAA, ADAO will be collaborating with other leading organizations on content and design.

Our goal is to develop and launch a rich, user-friendly asbestos education and awareness campaign to be used locally in Spokane, throughout Washington State, our nation, and the world. This campaign will feature prevention-centric resources targeted at three specific audiences vulnerable to asbestos exposure: homeowners/DIYers, workers, businesses. We’ll also work to provide audience-specific information for emergencies and disasters that cause structural damage.

With plans to translate our resources into multiple languages, this campaign will have international reach as well. Through collaboration, this information will advance prevention, management, and the human rights issues connected to asbestos mining and use.

In light of recent moves from Congress and the White House to eviscerate or even abolish the EPA, diminish public access to government-backed research, and slash asbestos victims’ civil rights with the FACT Act, access to free educational materials has never been more important.

ADAO is happy to be in a position to provide and disseminate this information, and we are beyond grateful for brave, progressive, and just legal and political leaders like the Washington Attorney General and Assistant Attorney General who are helping to make it possible.

The phenomenal team at SRCAA does great work in the region implementing some of the most progressive asbestos laws in the nation, and they have a wealth of knowledge and insight. We’re thrilled that SRCAA’s lead asbestos inspector, Deirdre Fitzgerald, will be presenting at ADAO’s 2017 Asbestos Awareness and Prevention Conference in April.

If you have any suggestions about prevention information you think would be especially helpful, or is currently hard to find, please send an email to info@asbestosdiseaseawareness.org.

In unity,

Linda
