Check your children’s shelves TODAY!

Asbestos contamination has been discovered in a makeup product marketed to young girls and tweens from the popular national chain Justice, an investigative team from ABC 11 news in North Carolina reported.

The “Just Shine Shimmer Powder,” sold at the national chain store Justice, tested positive for four heavy metals, including lead, in addition to tremolite asbestos. The products were analyzed at the Scientific Analytical Institute in Greensboro, North Carolina.

“In this powder designed for children, they could die an untimely death in their thirties or forties because of the exposure to asbestos in this product,” said Sean Fitzgerald, the Director of Research and Analytical Services at the Greensboro lab.

When I spoke with Sean, he confirmed that the powder is part of an in-house makeup line manufactured exclusively for Justice in China. The asbestos in the makeup comes from contaminated talc, a problem that originates in the mines. Tremolite is the same type of asbestos Sean found in children’s toys manufactured from China in some product testing he did for ADAO in 2007.

“Talc is a mineral, but it also forms in the earth with other minerals and some of those minerals are asbestos,” Fitzgerald said. Talc is commonly used in cosmetics, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) “considers it unacceptable for cosmetic talc to be contaminated with asbestos.”

Justice has already pulled the product from its online shop, and a recall will be issued. But parents should take time TODAY to make sure your children don’t already have this deadly product on their own shelves.
