Each year, ADAO dedicates April 1-7 to increasing awareness of asbestos and preventing exposure by bringing together experts and victims from around the world to share, learn, and take action. Today, we’re highlighting Champions of Change who are instrumental in the global struggle to eliminate asbestos-caused diseases, whether it be by working for a ban, caring for victims of asbestos disease, or risking exposure themselves to keep others safe. Today will also feature the story of Day Two Ambassador: John Panza, Ohio, US.
Without a ban, asbestos remains legal and lethal in the USA and nearly 70% of countries around the world today. This year, however, ADAO experienced unimaginable legislative progress. The Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act was introduced in both chambers of Congress by Senator Jeff Merkley and Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. Along with these two dedicated champions, there are more than 20 incredible cosponsors and powerful endorsees listed below:
S.2072 Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act of 2017 H.R.5114 Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act of 2018 It took years of legislative advocacy with a lot of champions working together to get us to this point — including nearly 12,000 advocates who have signed ADAO’s international petition to ban asbestos. Firefighter Pat Morrison and mesothelioma surgeon Dr. Raja Flores are featured in Earl Dotter’s latest iteration of his exhibit BADGES: A Memorial Tribute to Asbestos Workers. While we wait on policymakers to finally enact a ban, thousands of Champions of Change are manning the front lines of the crisis. This brand new poster from award-winning photographer Earl Dotter highlights three types of champions who are all so very important to the the global struggle to end asbestos caused diseases: Firefighters, like Pat Morrison, who face asbestos exposure every day in their work to save American lives. Millions of homes and buildings across the nation are laden with asbestos, and when they burn, that lethal asbestos is released into the air. Because of this, firefighters are twice as likely to die from asbestos-caused mesothelioma than the general population, according to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Yet firefighters and first responders — like the thousands who were at Ground Zero and have since fallen ill — continue to run toward danger at their own expense. We owe it to these champions to continue fighting to ban asbestos. Medical professionals, like top mesothelioma surgeon Raja Flores, MD, Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, are also instrumental in ending asbestos diseases. The doctors I’ve met in this field are so driven to find a cure, to learn ways to catch disease faster and discover better treatments. While we await a cure, doctors have found ways to help Mesothelioma Warriors live thriving lives in the face of their disease. Last but far from least are caregivers — all of you who are caring for someone ill. YOU, too, with your bravery and kindness, are Champions of Change. Your selfless dedication means the world to those you care for and comforts and inspires others facing scary diagnoses for themselves and loved ones.
