EVENT DETAILS

On September 26 at 6:30 pm EST, ADAO will be livestreaming Kathleen Mullen’s Breathtaking documentary via our website, giving our globally connected family of supporters a rare and mutual glimpse into the very personal side of asbestos mining. This film reaffirms that it is not about dollars for a government, but tragedy that has no price tag. Ontario filmmaker Kathleen Mullen has beautifully documented “a personal investigation into the continued use of asbestos” that details her father’s tragic death due to exposure to asbestos from Canadian mining. The fact that this will air on National Mesothelioma Awareness Day is no accident; this gives us a powerful opportunity to remember those we lost and also renew our faith in the possibility for change.

Breathtaking addresses the asbestos industry through a moving and personal investigation into the death of Kathleen’s father, and the baffling present-day use, public mining, and incessant export of asbestos in spite of decades of scientific evidence confirming that asbestos kills people.  Kathleen uses heartbreaking clips of her dying father’s legal testimony, together with family photos, and home movies to take the audience on an investigative journey.  From her family home in British Columbia to Quebec, India and Detroit, Mullen paints a global, yet still personal picture of the many lives affected by the continued use of asbestos.

Kathleen’s film is brilliant and our opportunity to livestream it proves again the power of our social media-driven connections. While I have been working on my presentation for the 19th World Congress on Safety and Health at Work in Turkey, I’ve discovered even more exciting social media network facts!  Recent data reports that 50% of the world’s population is under the age of 30 and we know technology is their first language. 90% of the world now lives in a place with access to a mobile network. This data demonstrates that we have the ability to share information instantaneously across the globe. There is still hope that we can have a positive impact on generations to come because, once again, knowledge is power.

We hope you will tune in on September 26 to see this beautiful film, join the discussion, and share with your friends and family.

Together, change is possible.
