TWEET THIS! “#ADAO Caps Off Successful Trip to India with Two Presentations” http://bit.ly/v6aFpO #asbestos

ADAO sends our sincere congratulations to the Asian Ban Asbestos Network (A-BAN), International Ban Asbestos Secretariat (IBAS), Occupational and Environmental Health Network of India (OEHNI), and Mine Labour Protection Campaign (MLPC) for their successful conference in Jaipur, India!

I had the honor of presenting “USA: Trends and Challenges on Preventing Environmental and Occupational Asbestos Exposure” to conference attendees where more than  70 people from 15 countries attended. It was wonderful to return and see many of the colleagues I met in Hong Kong at the first A-BAN meeting in 2009. Between conferences, I joined other attendees in an eye-opening field visits to a stone manipulation factory around Jaipur.

Following that, I attended and presented at the Asian Network for the Rights of Occupational and Environmental Victims(ANROEV)’s Annual Conference, which was very impressive! This two-day conference brought together victims, activists, Occupational Safety and Health advocates, trade unions, NGOs, and researchers to connect and share their experiences in the OSH field.  Noel Colina and I co-facilitated this workshop where more than 25 people from 7 countries gathered to learn more abour social media and left excitedly about strengthening our collaboration. ADAO had the privilege of developing a four-hour, six-module workshop titled, “Leveraging Social Media Advocacy for Environmental and Occupational Disease Prevention,” that detailed international trends and examples of social media advocacy, how to build and sustain a culture of collaboration, leveraging new tools and analytics, best practices, and hands-on applications of social media messaging.

As is tradition with ADAO, this workshop and my presentation from the previous conference were both dedicated to Larry Davis, a courageous mesothelioma victim and unrelenting ban asbestos advocate.

ADAO and I are so thankful for the opportunity to attend and present at these momentous conferences and to have met so many active and dedicated individuals from around the world.  As the global ban asbestos network continues to expand and there is a common need to build on collaborative efforts and share knowledge with each other. ADAO is excited to collaborate with new partners to even more effectively educate, advocate, and provide community support to our global community.

Below is a summary from the Social Media Advocacy Workshop in Jaipur, India written by Mohit Gupta from Environics Trust

Linda Reinstein and Noel Colina helped in organising a workshop on “Social Media Advocacy” during the ANROEV Annual Conference organised from Nov 16-18, 2011 at Jaipur, Rajasthan. More than 25 participants from 7 countries took part in the workshop.

Linda Reinstein began the workshop by giving examples of the Social Media Campaigns and International trends. Some of the campaigns mentioned were the Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Rock Hudson and AIDS and Lance Armstrong “Livestrong” campaign. The participants were informed about the benefits of building and sustaining a culture of collaboration.

Some figures about the use of internet / mobile in the developing and developed world were shared to highlight the importance of technology. Some of the important internet tools and sites like Facebook, Twitter linkedin, youtube were shared and their importance in Social Media Advocacy were pointed out during the workshop.

Participants were told about the importance of growing the  organisation by using these important tools, leveraging the network, how to reach and connect with the rest of the world easily, quickly and without much financial implications, raising money and effecting policy change.

Mr Colina also explained to the participants about the benefits and also the pitfalls while using Internet. “Information on Internet is permanent” and one should be careful about what is put online. We should be careful when we put our photos, personal information and other details online as our accounts can be hacked and information misused. Do not blindly trust any information and email received.

“Every tool is a weapon if you hold it right – Ani DiFranco”. The saying was supplemented with an introduction to the weapons available through Internet. The participants were informed about Press Releases, Video Blog, Newsletters, eblasts, Interviews, letters to editors etc.

Ms Reinstein also demonstrated these tools through the GBAN website http://www.gban.net./ and also explained about an easy to use software called Tweetdeck.

It was decided to circulate a resource sheet which can be used by all to know more about the tools available for Social Media advocacy and also to have a regular skype meeting between interested parties to learn more from each other.
