Senators Boxer & Markey to Hold Press Conference Calling for a Toxic Chemicals Reform Bill that Protects Children and Families from Dangerous Toxins

U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works “Senators Boxer and Markey to Hold Press Conference to Call for a Toxic Chemicals Reform Bill that Protects Children and Families from Dangerous Toxins”BACKGROUND:  Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW), and Senator Edward J. Markey (D-MA), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Superfund, Waste Management, and Regulatory Oversight, will hold a press conference on the urgent need to pass a toxic chemical reform bill that is stronger than current law to protect children and communities from the dangers of toxins. On March 12^th, Senators Boxer and Markey introduced the Alan Reinstein and Trevor Schaefer Toxic Chemical Protection Act as an alternative to the Udall-Vitter-Inhofe toxics bill. The Boxer-Markey bill is named after Alan Reinstein, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 66 from mesothelioma, a disease often associated with exposure to asbestos.  Alan and his wife, Linda, cofounded the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) in 2004. The legislation is also named after Trevor Schaefer, a brain cancer survivor who was diagnosed with the disease twelve years ago at the age of 13.
