Slide1The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is proud to present a new weekly series” Meet the Speakers and Honorees,” highlighting one or several attendees at our highly-anticipated 12th Annual International Asbestos Awareness & Prevention Conference!  The ADAO Conference, which will take place on April 8-10, 2016 in Washington, DC, combines over 30 expert opinions, victims’ stories, and new technological advancements from more than 10 countries into one united voice raised for asbestos awareness.  ADAO is the only U.S. nonprofit that organizes annual conferences dedicated solely to preventing exposure and eliminating asbestos-caused diseases.  Register today!

head shot jbkBrent Kynoch (Moderator) is the Managing Director of the Environmental Information Association, headquartered just outside of Washington, DC in Chevy Chase, MD. He has been the Managing Director of the Association since 1996, but previously had served EIA in other volunteer roles on the Board of Directors as an officer, and ultimately as the President of EIA in 1988 and 1989. EIA has spent over 30 years at the forefront in providing its members with the information needed to remain knowledgeable, responsible and competitive in the environmental health and safety industry. When Mr. Kynoch changes his hat to his “paying job,” he is the President of Kynoch Environmental Management, Inc., (KEM) an environmental engineering and industrial hygiene firm also headquarted in Chevy Chase, MD. KEM provides innovative environmental solutions to general contractors, owners, property managers and the commercial real estate community to address concerns associated with asbestos, lead, indoor air quality, mold, PCBs, mercury, LEED compliance and environmental management systems. Mr. Kynoch began his career in the environmental business in 1984, when he founded his first company, AAS Environmental, which was sold in 1999. Mr. Kynoch is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, where he received a degree in mechanical engineering. He is called upon frequently as a speaker, as a writer and as an expert regarding environmental contaminants. He has testified before both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate regarding asbestos, and has written numerous articles on asbestos management and control.

Tom-Laubenthal-photoTom Laubenthal (US Training & Regulations) is the Training Supervisor & Technical Chief for The Environmental Institute in Marietta, GA. He has more than 31 years of industry service and is considered a nationally recognized expert within the asbestos and lead-based paint control industries. He has worked as a Technical Expert for the NIST/NVLAP PLM laboratory accreditation program since 1988; held a variety of leadership roles including as a past National President of the Environmental Information Association; served on a variety of national-level professional association committees; and recently managed the complete revision of the EPA’s 1985 document “Guidance for Controlling Asbestos-Containing Materials in Buildings” known as the “EPA Purple Book.” He has served on EPA and NVLAP regulatory review panels, has published extensively in print and e-media, and is regularly invited to speak at technical meetings on topics of asbestos detection and control. He received his B.S. in Geology from Georgia State University.

john nJohn Newquist (US Occupational Safety & Health) is an independent safety trainer, author, and consultant. He has been interviewed for his safety expertise and OSHA insight by NPR, BNA, Safety + Health Magazine, Mother Jones, and several more. He works with numerous companies to address their OSHA and safety compliance needs. He has a BS in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a Masters of Science in Industrial Management from Northern Illinois University. He is a Certified Safety Professional. He has taught hundreds of safety seminars across the country including the National VPPPA, Construction Safety Conference, American Society of Safety Engineers, National Fire Protection Association, and numerous Building Trade Councils. He worked for OSHA from 1983-2012 and was also the Area Director of the Peoria Area Office. He currently teaches safety classes at the Construction Safety Council.

brad parkerBrad Parker is currently the National Assistant Secretary of the Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union (CFMEU) – Construction & General Division – Australia. His responsibilities at the CFMEU include National Work Health & Safety as well as National Vocational Education & Training related matters. Brad’s other responsibilities include governance and compliance. He is also a member of the CFMEU National Executive. Brad is responsible for Asbestos related issues nationally and globally for the CFMEU and is a current member of the Asbestos Safety Eradication Agency – Building, Construction & Demolition Sectors Committee. Brad is also a current Director of the Australian Construction & Property Services Industry Skills Council (CPSISC), Director of Manufacturing Skills Australia (MSA) and an alternate Director of the Australian Construction Industry Redundancy Trust (ACIRT).

richTony Rich has literally served “in the trenches” as an industrial hygienist and environmental technician in the consulting field for the past 20 years, specializing in asbestos-related work, including: inspection surveys, abatement monitoring/sample analyses, project management, regulatory compliance, and worker training. He has also received microscopy training from McCrone Research Institute for identification of bulk asbestos via polarized-light microscopy (PLM). Through the course of his occupation and personal endeavor, Tony has developed an extensive and compelling collection of asbestos-related photographs, product materials, artifacts, historical books, industry documents, film archives, and other related media which have been utilized in a multitude of applications for various organizations worldwide, including, but not limited to: product and material research, asbestos awareness education blogs, informational presentations, corporate and governmental training programs, regulatory guidance documents, science and trade publications, university textbooks, museum exhibits, and even as legal evidence.

samuselsonAnn Samuelson is from Seaside, OR. Since her father, Stan Grimberg, lost his battle with mesothelioma 32 years ago, ADAO has given Ann an opportunity to volunteer, work with others, and make a difference. She has served as a County Commissioner, is a Director on NW Regional Education Service District Board, and is a licensed Real Estate Broker in the state of Oregon. She holds steadfast in the hope that elected officials will listen and stop this man-made disaster. Ann advocates to ban asbestos in the USA and worldwide, compensation for victims, and is proud to be a part of the global growth ADAO has developed through social media, advocacy, and our partners around the world. This is Ann’s second year as a presenter at the ADAO conference.

christine winterChristine Winter has spent the last 15 years working within the asbestos sector, from a UK Trade Association to independent asbestos auditing, 14 years as the engine of her own asbestos training company & 6 years and co-founder of a representative organisation for asbestos training providers, IATP, as the Chair Person and communications officer for the organisation. Her skills lie in communication, representation, social media, relationship building, networking, sourcing and effectively communicating relevant asbestos information. She has been working with ADAO since 2007 and shares the vision and mission that “sharing makes us stronger & together change is possible.” She believes ADAO has come a long way, but believes we still have a long way to go, the only cure we have at present is prevention, education & safe removal from our built environment. She’s honoured to be part of the ADAO Prevention Asbestos Board and look forward to working with the asbestos community.
