We have some exciting news about two members of the ADAO family! Mavis Nye, a Mesothelioma Warrior, and her husband Ray, both dedicated ban asbestos activists, will be receiving an honorary degree from the University of Kent on July 9.

Mavis was diagnosed with Mesothelioma in 2009, and was exposed to asbestos by washing Ray’s clothes when he would return from work. Ray worked as a Shipwright in the Chatham Dockyard in the United Kingdom. Just like the many others who are exposed to asbestos in a similar way, Mavis and Ray had no idea that by doing the laundry, Mavis could be exposed to asbestos, and the lethal threat it poses on so many lives.

After endless rounds of chemo, and a six month life diagnosis, Mavis decided to enroll in a medical trial for mesothelioma after 4 years of Chemotherapy and Mavis is still with us 10 years later, fighting as hard as ever, and advocating even harder for a ban on asbestos.

Mavis and Ray decided to found the Mavis Nye Foundation in order to raise awareness of mesothelioma and the harms of asbestos, as well as to give hope to other mesothelioma warriors, and a place for patients and families to connect. Mavis and Ray use social media, and their blog – A Diary Of A Mesowarrior Living With Mesothelioma Asbestos – to get their message out, and offer endless amounts of support to others who are battling the same fight.

Mavis not only shares her story on her website, but has done so in many other places. One such feature was in a recent article written by The Guardian, highlighting her story to tell the dangers of asbestos.

We are thrilled for Mavis and Ray that the University of Kent has recognized their incredible work and are presenting them with a degree. They are truly two of the most deserving people to receive this honor. The award presentation will be on Tuesday, July 9 at 10:30am BST at Rochester Cathedral in Rochester, UK.

Congratulations Mavis and Ray. Continue your great work and inspiring many around the world!

Together, we make change happen.

Linda
