This September, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) will have the privilege of participating in the inaugural OSHAfrica 2019 Conference in South Africa.

This year’s speakers include impressive names such as Dr. Ivan Ivanov, World Health Organization,  Dr. Jukka Takala, ICOH, Alan Steven, IOSH, Mr. Ehi Iden, the OSHAFRICA President; and Dr. Claire Deacon, a member of the ADAO Prevention Board. ADAO is grateful to the extremely resourceful and hard-working organizing committee for bringing together this line-up of accomplished individuals to exchange ideas about occupational safety and health.

Ahead of the conference, I was honored to contribute to a column to National Safety, the official magazine of the Safety First Association, which is one of the organizations responsible for the conference. I shared ADAO’s gratitude for the chance to present at OSHAfrica 2019, and reaffirmed our belief that collaboration across national boundaries is a key to our movement’s success.

At this year’s conference, I look forward to joining five other experts in a panel discussion focused on occupational diseases and health: Dr. Sengul Cosar from the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services in Turkey; Kobus Dekker from Kobus Dekker Occupational Hygiene Consultancy; Dr. Zumbi Musiba, the Chief Advisor at Occupational Health and Safety, African; Dr. Elton Dorkin, Director at Dr. EP Dorkin & Associates; and Dr. Paul Obadia from the University of Lubumbashi. Alongside these esteemed speakers, I will be discussing methods to improve occupational safety and health with stakeholders. My presentation – entitled ‘Strategic Asbestos Education, Prevention, and Policy in Pursuit of Vision Zero’ – is focused on strategic, cost-effect, and replicable educational and advocacy strategies for nonprofits, trade unions, governments, and businesses.

OSHAfrica 2019 will undoubtedly build on the national OSH conferences held in Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire and Nigeria.

ADAO is looking forward to forging new paths for prevention, compliance, and enforcement for workers and their families.
