‘Biking for an Asbestos Ban’ || Steve McQueen’s Motorcycle Takes Another Ride at Miles for Meso 2019

Posted on September 24, 2019

ADAO is proud to be participating in Miles for Meso again this year. We will be hosting a the Friday community dinner, organizing the tribute bib program, maximizing our virtual team, and more.

This year’s race will be different to those in the past. In a special tribute to Steve McQueen, one of the most notable Mesothelioma Warriors of his era, the late actor’s motorcycle will be displayed at the race. ADAO’s virtual race team has taken inspiration from this memorial and decided to name our team “Biking for an Asbestos Ban” in honor of McQueen’s bike.

McQueen’s 1938 Triumph 500cc 5T Speed Twin bike will be viewable during Miles for Meso event and then permanently on display at Simmons Hanly Conroy as a tribute to McQueen’s courageous mesothelioma battle.

As “the King of Cool” himself famously said, “When I believe in something, I fight like hell for it.”  Barbara Minty McQueen, his widow, also follows his philosophy and has shown utmost dedication in the mission to the ban asbestos in the U.S.

Barbara has been an outspoken advocate following her husband’s passing, appearing before Congress on behalf of the movement and participating in several ADAO efforts. Her powerful memoir, The Last Mile… Revisited even featured a section about ADAO. We are immensely grateful for her hard work and feel privileged to be celebrating her husband’s legacy at this event.

There are lots of ways to get involved with this race, whose proceeds will go toward ADAO’s education, advocacy, and community-building efforts worldwide. If you can participate in the race in Alton, IL, registration is still open! The race is scheduled for 9:00 CDT on September 28.

If coming to Alton isn’t feasible, you can still cheer on runners—both virtually or in-person. Stay tuned to ADAO and Miles for Meso’s social media channels throughout the day for updates from the race. You can also donate to the cause before, during and after the race.

ADAO extends its sincerest gratitude to Simmons Hanly Conroy LLP for designating us a the beneficiary of the Miles for Meso race and walk event. Since 2014, Miles for Meso has raised more than $150,000 to support ADAO’s education, advocacy, and community support efforts.

In honor of Steve McQueen and all Mesothelioma Warriors, we look forward to the Friday community dinner and terrific Saturday event. Thank you to all who are supporting and participating!
