We have been touched by asbestos in individual ways, yet we are joined together by a common bond of community. As a testament to the strength of our global family, Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is highlighting the courageous stories of our members with the new “Share Your Story” feature on our website.

This week, we would like to share the courageous story of Janine.

We encourage you to submit your personal stories by clicking here and following the simple instructions on the page. In sharing, comes healing. Remember, you are not alone.

JANINE’S STORY

Name: Janine

Treatment: Chemo with Alimta and Cisplatin and Carboplatin

How has Asbestos changed your life? (unedited):

When I was told I had Mesothelioma, I was in disbelief.  I never thought that just washing my husband’s work clothes after he had cut asbestos building panels at work, would cause me to contract Meso. He cut the boards in the 70’s and early 80’s, and at that time, we had no idea how dangerous exposure to asbestos was.  I was an innocent victim and feel my life has been robbed.  I had lung surgery in Feb. of 2010 but at that time the surgeon did not remove the pleural lining, just a tumor.  I feel if he had remove the lining or the lung, my chances of survival would be greater. I have 3 new grandbabies that I so want to see grow up, but unless some other treatment can be discovered, it is doubtful that will happen.  I’ve had to quit working and go on disability and my life has changed 100%.
