JUST IN FROM BRAZIL by Fernanda Giannasi STEPHAN SCHMIDHEINY: THE “BILL GATES OF SWITZERLAND” or “THE GODFATHER” OF ASBESTOS?
We were joined by people from around the world last night in remembrance of those who have or are currently battling mesothelioma, such as those most closely affected by the Eternit Trial in Italy. The Eternit criminal trial charges executives of the asbestos cement enterprise with the willful failure to protect their employees and factory neighbors, resulting in thousands of workers’ and everyday citizens’ deaths from asbestos exposure in the decades since. As a landmark international case for the first time threatening to put asbestos executives in jail, the trial has criminal and policy implications for numerous countries around the world. ADAO has been following the case from its inception and, thanks to the amazing journalism of Silvana Mossano, is able to share it with you. As noted below, most recently, Italy’s Minister of Health and other officials stepped in to assist the mayor and town council in resolving the public outrage that sparked from a deal proposed to local authorities by the accused Swiss billionaire, Stephan Schmidheiny. Several meetings took place over the holidays, but Casale Monferrato’s local authorities have not yet decided whether or not they will accept Schmidheiny’s proposal. La sensazione è che il patto con Schmidheiny per ora non si firmerà. Che non si faranno accordi prima della sentenza, “prima che si sia fatta giustizia” per dirla con le parole di Romana Blasotti Pavesi. Non c’è nessun atto ufficiale che avvalori questa sensazione, ma certe frasi colte negli ultimi comunicati del Comune e qualche parola del sindaco letta tra le righe più ufficiali induce a ritenere che l’invito alla “rivalutazione” da parte del ministro Renato Balduzzi, la supplica del vescovo Alceste Catella, il suggerimento a decisioni concordate con vittime e famigliari caldeggiate dalla Diocesi, fino alle parole di don Ciotti nella messa di Natale a Murisengo, stanno muovendo verso una “riconsiderazione” di quella che, in termini puramente giuridici, era stata presentata dal Comune come la soluzione più utile: ovvero accettare i 18,3 milioni di euro come anticipazione certa del risarcimento (da impiegare in bonifiche, ricerca e sviluppo), in cambio della revoca di parte civile in ogni procedimento che potrà riguardare Schmidheiny in rapporto ai lutti di amianto inferti alla città come comunità.
The feeling is that in the end for the time being the settlement with SS will not be signed, that there will be no agreement before the judgment ‘before justice’ to quote Romana Blasotti Pavesi’s words. There is no official statement to support this feeling but some of the sentences in the course of the latest statements by the City Council and some of the mayor’s words in the official statements could lead us to believe that the Minister of health’s call to ‘reconsider’ and the supplication by Bishop Alceste Catella, as well as the suggestion of the Dioceses to decide with the families of the victims, and the words of Don Ciotti at the Xmas mass in Murisengo are all leading to reconsider. The settlement the City Council had been offered had been presented as the obvious solution ‘take the 18.3 million euro (….) in exchange for withdrawing from all present and future civil cases against SS.’
La reazione dei casalesi è stata di portata storica. Si è provato a ingabbiarla in accuse di strumentalizzazioni politiche, ma le foto e i video inquadrano massaie, pensionati, infermiere, medici, ragazzi, insegnanti, operai, commercianti, sportivi (anche l’altra sera, nel palazzetto di Siena dove ha giocato la squadra casalese di basket, i tifosi hanno esposto uno striscione, come già al Palaferraris e al Natal Palli), quelli che votano a sinistra o a destra, e che su questa “proposta indecente” non sentono ragione. Il sindaco ammette di essere stato molto toccato da email e lettere di chi gli ha espresso con correttezza e dignità la sofferenza per un eventuale accordo, prima del verdetto, con colui che è accusato di aver provocato questa strage non ancora finita.
The reaction of the people of Casale will go down in history – they tried to fence it in, but the photos and videos of housewives, old age pensioners, nurses, doctors, youngsters, teachers, workers, shopkeepers, sportspeople (the other night at the Siena Basketball Stadium where the Casale team was playing the Siena one, there was a banner, as had happened on two other occasions at the Palaferraris and the Natal Palli0, there were people who voted right and people who voted left, but who will not take the ‘indecent proposal’ lying down). The mayor admits he was very touched by the emails and letters he received by people who expressed politely and with dignity the suffering he would cause with the agreement before the sentence, a settlement with the person accused of the slaughter.
Bruno Pesce ricorda che “poco più di un anno prima del processo del ’93 a Casale contro alcuni dirigenti Eternit, in tribunale un signore mi disse ‘E’ colpa vostra (dei sindacati, ndr) se l’Eternit ha chiuso, poteva esserci ancora…’: una delle poche lettere ora favorevoli alla transazione con lo svizzero è firmata da questo signore. Io penso – prosegue Pesce – che quelle affermazioni siano figlie di una distorsione nei confronti della lotta all’amianto, che ha impedito di comprendere che questa battaglia raccoglie la partecipazione di tutta la città, indipendentemente da colore politico, età e differenze sociali”. Si domanda: “Ma cosa deve ancora succedere, a causa dell’uso criminale dell’amianto da parte della potente multinazionale Eternit, perché anche i più titubanti se ne rendano conto?”.
Bruno Pesce remembers ‘ a little more than ayear before the 1993 trial in Casale against Eternit management a man said to me in court: ‘ it’s your (the Union’s) fault if Eternit closed down, it could have still been up and running…’ one of the few letters our papers received in favour of the agreement is signed by that same man. I believe, says Pesce, that such statements are the result of a distorted view of the struggle against asbestos which has made it impossible for them to understand that this battle sees the whole city, regardless of their political leaning, age or social class. What else has to happen to realize the damage caused by the criminal use of asbestos? For the most hesitant to realize?’
Intanto, i toni si sono abbassati, nell’attesa che il ministro Balduzzi fissi la data per un incontro richiesto dal Comune, al quale, in una lettera spedita ieri a Roma, anche l’Afeva chiede di partecipare in spirito di condivisione. Già questa fase interlocutoria induce a pensare che la giunta non darà mandato al sindaco di firmare accordi a breve. L’urgenza imposta da Schmidheiny sarà disattesa? Pare di intuire di sì.
In the meantime things have quieted down while waiting for the Minister of health Balducci to set a date for the meeting with Municipality (which the municipality requested). Yesterday Afeva had asked to be invited in an attempt to ‘share’ more. This event in itself means the Mayor should not sign in the immediate future. Will the ‘urgency’ SS was suggesting be disregarded? Possibly.
Per analizzare gli sviluppi e coordinare altre iniziative della cittadinanza è previsto un incontro pubblico oggi, alle 17,30, nella sede dell’Afeva, in piazza Castello. E da Oltreoceano, Linda Reinstein, presidente Associazione Famigliari Vittime Usa, lancia l’invito ad aderire, sia simbolicamente online sia nelle proprie case, all’accensione di candele, dalle 19 alle 20 del 4 gennaio, “in a sostegno delle battaglie che con coraggio si stanno combattendo contro il mesotelioma”.
Today at 5.30 there will be an open meeting at the AFEVA headquarters in Piazza castello (Casale). And from the other side of the Ocean Linda Reinstein, president of the USA Association of Victims and Family members launches an appeal to symbolically light a candle ‘online’ from 7 to 8 of January the 4th to support those who are fighting courageously against mesothelioma.
“In tantissimi – auspica Pesce – vorremmo poter riconoscere solennemente all’Amministrazione di Casale di averci ripensato, di aver fatto la scelta più giusta, per il presente e per il futuro”: migliaia di casalesi sperano non in una retromarcia, ma di ritrovare il passo sincronizzato con il loro Comune, con cui hanno sempre camminato insieme, almeno da 30 anni.
Many of us are hoping to be able to acknowledge the fact that the City of Casale has/will change position, and thus work with the Municipality with who we have marched together for 30 years.
