    BREAKING NEWS

U.S. Senator Patty Murray to re- introduce "Ban Asbestos in America Act"

Today, March 1st, Sen. Patty Murray will re-launch her 5 year effort to ban asbestos and protect American workers and their families.

As Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety, Murray will hear testimony on the need to ban asbestos and the deadly consequences of asbestos exposure for workers and their families.

The hearing will be held at 10:00 am EST in the Senate Dirksen building, Room 430. Further committee details can be viewed HERE. You may be able to hear the audio by visiting HERE and selecting "Dirksen 430" from the list of hearing rooms.

On behalf of ADAO and in attendance at the hearing will be Linda Reinstein, Doug Larkin and Herman Hamilton.

     Jordan Zevon to Perform
    Jordan 4

Jordan Zevon, ADAO's National Spokesman, is a singer and song writer whose father, the legendary Warren Zevon, died of mesothelioma in 2003. Jordan has recently completed his first full-length CD, which will be released this summer. His song, “The Joke’s on Me,” co-written with Jordan Summers, won first place in the pop category in the 2006 U.S.A. Songwriters Competition. “The Joke’s on Me” appears on his EP, “Jordan Zevon," available HERE.

In addition, Jordan was executive producer of his father’s final album, the Grammy-winning "The Wind". He also co-produced "Enjoy Every Sandwich: The Songs of Warren Zevon," a tribute CD that features an all-star cast of singers and musicians.

On May 1, Jordan will make his live performance debut at The Mint in Los Angeles. That same date HarperCollins/ECCO will publish "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon," compiled by Warren’s ex-wife, Crystal Zevon at his request. It tells Warren’s story thorough interviews with his friends, family and colleagues, including such stars as Jackson Browne, Lindsay Buckingham and David Crosby. Completing the Zevon hat trick, New West will release, "Preludes: Rare and Unreleased Recording," a two-CD set including some of Warren Zevon’s pre-1976 work, including demos, alternate versions, and unreleased songs, as well as segments of an interview. The set will appear on the heels of the March 27 release of two of Warren’s albums on CD for the first time – “The Envoy” and “Stand in the Fire: Live at the Roxy” – as well as a digitally remastered version of Warren’s first big hit album, “Excitable Boy.”

Jordan's immeasurable commitment to asbestos victims and concerned citizens has provided a strong voice that helps ensure that their rights are fairly represented and protected, while raising public awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure and often-deadly asbestos related diseases.

Asbestos Awareness Day Conference attendees will have the pleasure of hearing Jordan's latest work when he performs on Friday night.

    Les Skramstad to be Honored
    Les

Asbestos Victim to be Posthumously Recognized at Third Annual Asbestos Awareness Day Conference.

Asbestos victim Les Skramstad will be posthumously honored with the Alan Reinstein Memorial Award. Les was a Montana miner who lost his eleven year battle to diseases caused by asbestos on January 21, 2007 at age 70.

On March 31st, Les will be honored for his unwavering commitment to justice and asbestos disease awareness at the 3rd Annual Asbestos Awareness Day Conference in Philadelphia. He remained a beacon of hope and truth for nearly fifty years, even during his battle with asbestosis and mesothelioma. Les worked as a sweeper at Zonolite, a vermiculite mine in Libby, Montana for three years.

ADAO is pleased to honor Les Skramstad with the Alan Reinstein Memorial Award. Les not only fought a deadly asbestos disease, but also worked for decades to raise awareness about its dangers. We will always remember him as we continue our fight to prevent diseases caused by deadly asbestos fibers. Les always said, "This didn't 'happen' to us, this was 'done' to us."

In honor of Les, his sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Will Walter have estalibished a website HERE

Les has been honored for his advocacy around the world. You can read the article printed in the Missoulian HERE

URGENT: TO ANYONE IN NEW YORK ON OR AFTER 9/11

Time is running out for people to register to preserve the right to file for 9/11-related workers’ compensation. The final registration deadline is August 14, 2007.

By registering, workers and volunteers who may have been exposed to contaminants such as asbestos, which can cause illness after the passage of years or decades, will retain the right to file a compensation claim no matter when a 9/11-related condition becomes manifest.

People who performed any rescue, recovery or cleanup work after 9/11 are living in all 50 states (and in many foreign countries.) Many of them are unaware that they are at risk of developing 9/11-related disorders. Many are also unaware that by registering before August 14, they can protect their right to free healthcare if they ever develop a 9/11-related illness.

There is no residency or citizenship requirement to register with the New York Workers’ Compensation Board for 9/11- related compensation. If a worker or volunteer is eligible, it does not matter where he or she now lives. One does not need to be a citizen to register.

The New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health has established a hotline and a website to promote registration. People can go HERE to learn about the eligibility requirements and registration procedure or they can call the toll-free, 24-hour hotline, 1-866-WTC-2556.
