2013 AUS Asbestos Awareness Monthpsd_edited-1Australians have dedicated November to educating citizens across the country about the dangers of asbestos in and around homes. Even though all six forms of asbestos have been banned in Australia, asbestos-related diseases continue to increase. With home renovations and DIY projects, deadly asbestos fibers are left to linger in the air and cause life-threatening health effects upon inhalation. Even the smallest amount of asbestos dust can be lethal – so it’s crucial to be aware of the dangers and protect yourself!

At ADAO we applaud the AU Asbestos Awareness Month Campaign and urge you to visit their website for a wealth of information about the dangers of asbestos and being aware of where asbestos can be found in your home. Their excellent recommendations and precautions are just as important in the U.S. At the end of this blog, we would also like to share an asbestos awareness video sent to us by Alexandra Lynch from Australia about the importance of preventing exposure during home renovation.

Australia continues to lead the global ban asbestos movement by example, through their strong legislative regulations – the use of all forms of asbestos has been banned in AU since 2003 – and through their exemplary educational campaign efforts. Earlier this year, Australian delegates urged the Rotterdam Convention, a multilateral treaty in which nations around the world share responsibility for safe handling of imported hazardous chemicals, to add chrysotile asbestos to the Prior Informed Consent list.

ADAO is proud to work alongside the Australian Asbestos Awareness network. We admire and support their  ongoing commitment to asbestos education and advocacy to protect public health both nationally and globally.

Together, change is possible.
