As a huge believer in the power of social media, ADAO encourages you to celebrate the sixth annual Social Media Day on June 30, 2015. The day was founded by Mashable, a leading source for news, information, and resources for the “Connected Generation,” in 2010, and is intended to shine a spotlight on the digital revolution that is and has been unfolding before our eyes. According to Mashable, “Each year, thousands of people organize hundreds of meetups across the globe. From Australia to the Philippines, all the way to Sri Lanka and Morocco, countries come together every June to participate in this global movement.”

In this ever-changing world, technological advancements have dramatically changed the way we connect, share, and do business. Forty percent of the world’s population now has an internet connection. Fifty six percent of Americans have a profile on a social networking site, including 55% of Americans 45-54 years old. As internet penetration and social media participation grow, social media messaging is being utilized in ways that we have never seen before. Whether to connect and share information to a broader audience, tell a more compelling story, encourage grassroots action, or coordinate events, social media has allowed organizations to communicate messages to a broader audience more efficiently and effectively.

ADAO is extremely thankful for the advent and mass adoption of social media because it has allowed a small, lean nonprofit such as ourselves to take action, share information, and be heard! From the day that my daughter, Emily, created ADAO’s first Facebook page, our organization has embraced social media as a means of connecting and sharing. Tools such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn allow us to post educational content, organize campaigns, mobilize for action, honor Mesothelioma Warriors, and much more – all to an exponentially larger global audience at the click of a button, with no cost. From Global Asbestos Awareness Week to the “Say No to Toxic Chemicals” Petition to the courageous and touching Share Your Stories collection, social media has made ADAO’s work possible.

As Sarah McOnie of the McOnie Agency highlights, It’s not what you know, it’s who you know! Sarah and her team helped us with this year’s Global Asbestos Awareness Week, which relies heavily on social media for its reach and impact.

Today is a great day to remember all that has changed since the introduction of social media and appreciate what it has allowed us to accomplish!  Join the global Social Media Day conversation by:
