Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization Applauds Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection and Commissioner Jerry Farrell for Statewide Recall of CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit

Connecticut Lab Results Confirm Deadly Asbestos in Toy

Redondo Beach, CA  December 19, 2007 — The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) today announced that it applauds the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection and Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. for swift action to issue a statewide recall of the CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit. The following are excerpts from the statement issued today by the Department:

Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. announced that his agency is immediately stopping the sale of the CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit statewide, and is alerting consumers to return the item to the original place of purchase.

Mr. Farrell stated that “our own investigation of the CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit identified a real-life culprit that must be promptly eliminated.” He went on to say, “Lab results indicate that the composition and crystalline structure of the fibers is most consistent with tremolite, a form of asbestos and a toxic hazardous substance. Given the potential health hazards associated with any asbestos contact, we are removing the item from sale immediately, and are asking consumers to take swift measures to make sure their children aren’t exposed to the product. There is no ‘safe’ level of asbestos.”

“ADAO loudly applauds Commissioner Farrell and the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection for doing the right thing and pulling the CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit from retail shelves statewide,” stated Linda Reinstein, ADAO Co-Founder and Executive Director. “After our own tests in November revealed asbestos in this and other consumer products, we moved immediately to implement a nationwide awareness campaign about this very real danger. Today’s announcement by the state of Connecticut strongly reaffirms our position that there is no safe level of asbestos. We are hopeful that this will very rapidly lead to a nationwide recall of this dangerous toy and other products that contain asbestos. As parents have expressed to us in numerous emails and phone calls, we must protect our children from this kind of threat. It is certain that this deadly mineral was not on any child’s holiday list.”
