I was honored to accept an invitation on behalf of ADAO to present at Brazil’s International Seminar on Asbestos, in Campinas on October 6-8, 2016.
I am humbled to present alongside my friends and dedicated ADAO Science Advisory Board Members Dr. Arthur Frank and Dr. Barry Castleman, as well as my esteemed international colleagues Fernanda Gianassi, Bruno Pesce, Nicola Pondrano, Assunta Prato, and Agata Mazzeo.
I’ve been asked to provide an update on ADAO’s legislative advocacy in my presentation, “The Fight to Ban Asbestos in the United States.” With the year we’ve had, I’ve certainly got plenty to talk about! This year not only did the U.S. pass important chemical safety reforms, President Obama became the first sitting U.S. President to publicly acknowledge asbestos as a carcinogen and admit how deadly it truly is. Obama’s words have been heard around the globe, and I look forward to discussing their impact and our progress at Brazil’s conference.
As Fernanda wrote, “This seminar is being financed by the Conduct Adjustment Agreement Collective Fund signed by the Labour Public Ministry, and the companies that are part of the economic chain of asbestos and who have committed to abandon the use of this lethal mineral. It is a compensation for the damage caused to society and the implementation of the polluter-pay principle.”
At home and around the globe–together, change is possible.
