Each year, Australians dedicate the last week in November to asbestos awareness, education, and remembrance to those who have lost their lives from preventable asbestos-caused diseases.
Even though all six forms of asbestos have been banned in Australia, it is still present in buildings and the environment where it was used, thus asbestos exposure and related diseases persist. Home renovations, DIY projects, and natural disasters can dislodge asbestos fibers cause life-threatening health effects upon inhalation, especially by those who have not taken precautions to protect themselves. Even the smallest amount of asbestos dust can be lethal , so it is crucial to be aware of the dangers and the proper protection methods even in countries where it is banned.
This year, ADAO will feature seven Australian “Share Your Stories” during the week.
