Asbestos is a cancer-causing, naturally occurring mineral that has been used in a variety of construction materials and building products generally from the 1930’s to the present time. The accompanying graphic will give you some indication of where asbestos can be found in a home. The most important thing to remember about asbestos in your home or in your workplace is to LEAVE IT ALONE! Asbestos only becomes hazardous when it becomes airborne and can be ingested into the lungs. For this reason, disturbance of materials suspected of containing asbestos should be avoided at all times. If asbestos-containing materials must be disturbed as a part of a project or renovation effort, the work should be performed only by qualified, licensed professionals. For those in the U.S. it is important to note that asbestos HAS NOT been completely banned, so it is possible that even new construction may have asbestos-containing materials. Floor tiles, linoleum floors, mastics and gaskets may still LEGALLY contain asbestos, so care should be taken to minimize disturbance of these products. LEAVE ASBESTOS ALONE AND STAY SAFE!!
