FOR IMMEDIATE USE
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN FOR THE PREMIERE OF THE TRANSLATOR’S DILEMMA AT EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE 2011
We are only a few days away from the first performance of The Translator’s Dilemma at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011. The show will be on as part of PBH’s Free Fringe programme from August 6-15 and 19-27 at Princes Mall (Venue No. 203) at 13:00.
The Translator’s Dilemma, written by Jessica Phillippi and directed by Ishbel McFarlane, has been designed to raise awareness of the dangers asbestos still poses in our modern society.
The story is about Ottavia, a lecturer in translation studies, who is covering a class for a friend. When she opens the notes, however, she realises the content is closer to home than she could imagine. Can she give a lecture on asbestos without revealing her own deadly secrets?
Inspired by real life events in which thousands have died of asbestos-caused diseases, this fictional play explores the fallout of a killer mineral, and its effect on a young woman’s life. Performed in Italian and English, by two actors and one overhead projector.
As part of the Free Fringe, the show is an excellent opportunity for a cost-effective first theatre experience for audiences from different backgrounds.
Jessica Phillippi, Artistic Director of Scandal Theatre and RSAMD graduate said:
“We hope The Translator’s Dilemma will serve as a springboard for foundations, victims associations and the general public to work together towards an international ban on asbestos, to stop the further production and use of the substance, and to raise awareness about an issue that has been forgotten in many parts of the world”.
Scandal Theatre’s work attempts to spur small local movements of social justice, one play at a time. We are proud to be supported by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organisation (ADAO) in California, USA and Clydebank Asbestos Group (Glasgow, UK).
