DAY ONE – April 1, 2026
Ignite the Movement: Legacy, Facts, and Cancer Prevention
Day One of Global Awareness Asbestos Week (GAAW) opens with an unwavering message we have shared with our community for more than 20 years: asbestos is a known carcinogen with no safe level of exposure. Prevention remains the only cure, and it begins with education, advocacy, and community.
We launch this year’s campaign by honoring Alan Reinstein, whose mesothelioma diagnosis ignited a movement. We miss him every day, and in his honor, we will continue sharing resources and raising awareness until asbestos-caused diseases are eliminated. His words remain the heart of ADAO’s mission and a constant reminder of what is at stake:
“I’ll do anything to fight mesothelioma to have more time with my family — anything.“
Today, we also debut our 2026 Press Release and the 30-second PSA, “Asbestos: The Killer You Can’t See.” In addition, we revisit ADAO’s Top Ten Asbestos Facts. Both of these tools are designed to reach new audiences and reinforce a crucial truth: this crisis is far from over.
Special thanks to ARBAN champions Senator Jeff Merkley, Representative Suzanne Bonamici, and Representative Don Bacon for their leadership on asbestos awareness and prevention.
DAY ONE ACTION: Send your letter to Congress supporting the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act.
Today’s theme sets the tone for a powerful week of global unity and action, honoring those we have lost and fighting for those still at risk.
As ADAO says: One Word. One Week. One World. Together, we rise.
