The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is deeply saddened by the passing of Marie-Claude Jaurand, PhD, who died on May 31, 2026. An internationally respected scientist, visionary leader, and unwavering advocate for advancing mesothelioma research, Dr. Jaurand leaves behind a remarkable legacy that transformed our understanding of asbestos-related diseases and improved the lives of patients around the world.

Dr. Jaurand devoted her distinguished career to investigating the causes and mechanisms of malignant pleural mesothelioma. As one of the world’s foremost experts in asbestos toxicology and mineral fiber carcinogenesis, her pioneering research fundamentally advanced scientific understanding of how asbestos fibers cause cancer. She also helped develop some of the earliest experimental models of mesothelioma, laying the foundation for decades of discoveries that continue to shape research and treatment today.

Her scientific accomplishments extended far beyond the laboratory. In 1991, Dr. Jaurand co-founded the International Mesothelioma Interest Group (iMig) and served as its first president, creating a global network that continues to unite researchers, clinicians, and advocates dedicated to improving outcomes for mesothelioma patients worldwide. She also played a leading role in organizing the first French-language Mesothelioma Days in 2017, fostering international collaboration and scientific exchange.

ADAO was honored to welcome Dr. Jaurand as a featured speaker at our Annual Asbestos Awareness and Prevention Conference and to recognize her in 2017 with the Dr. Irving Selikoff Award. This prestigious honor recognizes individuals whose scientific excellence, integrity, and commitment to preventing asbestos-related diseases reflect the legacy of Dr. Irving J. Selikoff, MD. Dr. Jaurand embodied those ideals throughout her distinguished career.

Her work inspired scientists, physicians, advocates, and policymakers across the globe. She combined scientific rigor with humility, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to protecting public health. Her research continues to influence scientific discovery, clinical care, and global efforts to eliminate asbestos-caused diseases.
