ADAO and CVAV are overwhelmingly excited with the response we have seen to our North American Petition for the Elimination of Asbestos Disease, but there is still more that can be done. In the past five days since its launch, the petition has seen 300 signatures and continues to grow by the day. Each new name brings another punch to the fight, and we read each comment knowing that people want to see the end of asbestos and its deadly consequences. ADAO and CVAV would especially like to thank the International Mesothelioma Interest Group (iMig), the American Public Health Association (APHA), and the Environmental Information Association (EIA) for their support and lending their voices to our cause so early. These organizations are at the forefront of knowledge on occupational health and safety, and each knows just how deadly asbestos is. Here are just some of the powerful messages we have received from individuals, each detailing their own reason for fighting asbestos:

Ann, ON – There ARE other options than Asbestos. There is NO excuse to mine and export a known carcinogen, when we well know it will NOT be handled “appropriately”, no matter how it gets sugar coated by the industry.

Jill, OH – I am a daughter of a wonderful father, Bruce A. Waite, who died from mesothelioma in 2003. He was exposed as he taught school – in classrooms dusted in asbestos during construction. One life lost is too many, but for the countless who have died – no amount of profit is worth the havoc wreaked by asbestos and the companies who use it

Barbara, NY – I lost my husband to mesothelioma. He didn’t have to die. It was all because he was unnecessarily exposed to asbestos. This needs to stop!!

Sharon, BC – It is a dark reflection on our times when corporate greed and political games trump health concerns

We are off to a great start, but more needs to be done. We must meet our goal of 10,000 signatures if President Obama and Prime Minister Harper are to heed our message. If you have not signed the petition yet, please visit our petition site and lend your voice to the fight. If you have already signed on, please encourage three friends or family members to do the same. Eliminating asbestos use cannot be done alone, but takes the strength of a village, and it is here we have our advantage; this is a problem that affects everyone, our village is all of North America and beyond. Let’s stand up once and for all to stop the mining, exportation, and use of asbestos in North America!

In Unity,

Linda Reinstein
