As part of ADAO’s visit to Brazil to learn more about the international asbestos crisis, collaborate with asbestos activists and victims, and attend events surrounding the United Nations’ Rio+ 20 Conference on Sustainable Development, ADAO was honored to participate in the U.N.’s Rio+ Social Conference on June 19. This day-long event brought together 500 individuals in person and thousands digitally from around the world to discuss how new media can help foster positive solutions to global issues and promote “social good’. Topics of conversation included how social media and technology can affect energy, jobs, food, cities, and health; and how social media can positively change all of these issues. As the first forum specifically dedicated to social media in conjunction with the broader Summit, this signals the U.N.’s increasing emphasis on new technologies as methods of communication and change.

ADAO was thrilled to attend and learned so much from the distinguished group of speakers. Organizations and individuals across the globe are leveraging new technology and social media to start movements, be heard, and create change. Hearing these effective strategies from innovators, social entrepreneurs, and international organizations has given ADAO many ideas on how to best implement these ideas into our own community and better reach advocates for change across the world. Further, ADAO had the pleasure of connecting and forging new relationships with attendees from the U.N. Foundation., Mashable, and other organizations, with whom we hope to collaborate with on future projects.

In addition, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s gave a video speech about the importance of social media, innovation, and collaboration.
The unifying message of the event was the potential for change if we, as individuals, leverage the technology at our fingertips and learn from all peoples of all genders and nationalities, engage all sectors of society- including business- in powerful digital conversations, and share our experiences through innovative social media.

Kudos to the UN Foundation and its co-sponsors for a fantastic experience!

In unity,
