Join us in honoring the brave Mesothelioma Warriors. Submit a name to be included in the 2023 – 2024 Mesothelioma Warrior Candle Lighting Tribute via the Google Form. Please keep in mind that names submitted after December 15, 2023, will be lovingly added to our 2024 Global Asbestos Awareness Week Candle Lighting ceremony, scheduled for April 7, 2024.

Candle Lighting Ceremonies:

  • December 28, 2023: We light candles in heartfelt memory of the Mesothelioma Warriors who have sadly passed away.
  • January 4, 2024: We light candles in a warm show of love and support for the Mesothelioma Warriors bravely continuing their fight.

This tradition holds a special place in my heart. My mother, “Jill “Jillypoo” Vaughn,  battled mesothelioma with incredible courage for nearly two decades. Known for her warmth and uplifting spirit, she became a source of hope and comfort for patients and families around the globe. Her legacy of compassion lives on through this candle lighting tradition.

It’s been nine years since we lost her, and she became our angelic songbird. My mother started this beautiful tradition of lighting candles, creating a global list to honor the journeys of Mesothelioma Warriors. In 2009, from her hospital bed and with her characteristic determination, she handed over this heartfelt project to the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), despite not being tech-savvy. Today, this list has grown to include nearly 1,000 names, each one a story of strength and resilience.

To confirm if your loved one is already on the list, view the 2022 – 2023 Mesothelioma Warrior Candle Lighting List. If you wish to honor or remember a Mesothelioma Warrior through this tradition, please fill out this Google Form by December 15, 2023. Names submitted after this date will be reserved for next year’s ceremonies. Note: Names included in the 2022 Memorial Dedication Video will automatically be added to the Candle Lighting List, except for those who opted out.

A special thanks to ADAO for perpetuating my mother’s legacy through this candle lighting tradition. As the tradition’s founder, it is bittersweet to see her name on the “In loving memory” list. Her absence is deeply felt by us all.

In memory of my mom, Jill,

Tisha Vaughn
