2025 Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW)
On Day Four of Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW), we spotlight the essential connection between prevention and justice. Under the theme โAsbestos: Partnering for Prevention and Justice,โ we are reminded that policy, science, and personal stories must work in unison to end asbestos-related diseases.
Today, we honor Mike Mattmuller, whose story, โStaying Positive,โ embodies the resilience and hope that fuel our community. His strength in the face of mesothelioma reminds us why we do this work: so no one faces a diagnosis aloneโand every voice is heard in the fight for change.
We are deeply grateful to Dr. Raja Flores, Chair of Thoracic Surgery at Mt. Sinai and a valued member of ADAOโs Science Advisory Board, for his steadfast commitment to prevention. His words highlight the power of policy: โMembers of Congress can do more with a pen to prevent asbestos-caused diseases than I can with a scalpel.โ
We also proudly stand with our Partner for Prevention, the American Public Health Association (APHA). APHAโs decades-long commitment to evidence-based public health policies continues to strengthen national and global efforts to eliminate asbestos exposure.
At ADAO, we believe that community and collaboration are the heart of real progress. For nearly 20 years, weโve built a strong, compassionate networkโconnecting survivors with scientists, policy with prevention, and pain with purpose.
We have made so much progress over the past 20 years, including securing nearly two dozen National Asbestos Awareness Week Senate Resolutions. But there is much more that needs to be done, and this week is not only about celebrating our wins, but standing firm in our commitment to continue the fight.
