DAY TWO – April 2, 2026 | Global Asbestos Crisis: The Human Cost of Inaction

On Day Two of Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW), we spotlight a powerful policy statement from the American Public Health Association (APHA), Eliminating Exposure to Asbestos, a science-based call to end all asbestos use and prevent exposure in our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.

Today we also debut our 2026 Press Release and the 30-second PSA, एस ् बेस ् टोस: द किलर आप देख नहीं सकते,” translated into Hindi. Though many believe the asbestos crisis is a thing of the past, it remains legal and lethal around the world. These resources will help new audiences learn that exposure to this deadly carcinogen is a present-day concern.

We also share Julie’s story from the United States, featured in The Power of Public Health Advocacy: A Patient’s Perspective.” Like many others, she had no idea how dangerous asbestos could be until she was diagnosed with a life-changing illness. Her experience reminds us that behind every statistic is a person whose life has been forever changed by a preventable disease.

Despite decades of scientific warnings, asbestos continues to be used and imported in the United States. As Dr. Richard Lemen, former Assistant Surgeon General and ADAO Science Advisory Board Co-Chair, reminds us: “Thousands continue to be exposed and die from asbestos-related diseases.” These deaths persist despite a national ban being recommended nearly fifty years ago.

The American Public Health Association joins the global scientific community in clear consensus: the most effective way to eliminate asbestos-related diseases is to end the use of all forms of asbestos and prevent every avoidable exposure. We thank APHA for its leadership and evidence-based policy guidance.

DAY TWO ACTION: Share an asbestos fact on social media and invite others to follow #2026GAAW.
