The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) would like to thank the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy for responding to the Senate National Asbestos Awareness Week Resolution S. Res. 145. request “the Surgeon General of the United States to warn and educate people about the public health issue of asbestos exposure, which may be hazardous to their health.”

Today, Surgeon General Murthy used his social media channels to raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos to his 926,000 followers.  This is the 3rd asbestos warning Surgeon General Murthy has issued for Asbestos Awareness Week.

Dr. Murthy’s tweet, and instagram post stated:

“This week (April 1-7) is #NationalAsbestosAwarenessWeek. Even during the COVID19 Pandemic, other public health challenges remain priorities. Asbestos is a natural mineral fiber that can be used in homes, buildings, or products. If you think you have been exposed to asbestos or want to learn more, talk with your health care provider.″

Many Americans falsely believe the risk of asbestos exposure and related diseases is a concern of the past. But every year asbestos-related diseases cause more than 40,000 deaths in the United States.

ADAO thanks Dr. Murthy for his dedication to public health, and for upholding the responsibility of the Office of the Surgeon General to advise Americans when they are at risk of harm.

While promising research continues, prevention remains the only cure for asbestos-caused disease.
