PAB Logo Revised rev_edited-1 The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is pleased to present our new Prevention Advisory Board (PAB)! Members of PAB, the newest board on ADAO’s Leadership team, will serve as an expert resource for questions regarding asbestos prevention and abatement from individuals, politicians, publications, government websites, or other social non-profits. The board will also establish a FAQ’s and publish informative monthly blogs written by one of our PAB members.

The Prevention Advisory Board, led by Brent Kynoch (US) and Christine Winter (UK), is a ten person advisory board comprised of professionals with experience as industrial hygienists, asbestos trainers, and abatement contractors. Currently, there are seven confirmed board members from three different countries including: Christine Winters, (Co-Chair, UK Health & Safety Communications Liaison), Brent Kynoch, (Co-Chair, US Abatement), Tony Rich (US Industrial Hygiene), Tom Laubenthal (US Training & Regulations), Mark Winter (UK Training & Regulations), Claire Deacon (South Africa Occupational Safety & Health), John Newquist (US Occupational Safety & Health).  ADAO plans to expand the board by including three more members from two new countries in the coming months.

Brent Brent Kynoch  (Co-Chair, US Abatement)is the President of Kynoch Environmental Management, Inc. (KEM), which was formed in 1996 to provide value engineered consulting services within the asbestos abatement industry. Since 1996, KEM has earned a reputation as one of the leading consultants in asbestos inspection, assessment, abatement design, and management. J. Brent Kynoch has been a leader in the asbestos abatement industry since 1984. KEM’s licensed Asbestos Inspectors and Management Planners have provided extensive service in support of federal AHERA and NESHAP regulations. Over the years, they have successfully provided asbestos consulting for historic restorations, hospital renovations, and AHERA school abatement projects. With their experience in asbestos testing and management for the federal agencies, the Department of Defense, and architecture and engineering firms, they have earned a reputation for diversity and dependability.

christine winter Christine Winter (Co-Chair, UK Health & Safety Communications Liason). I have spent the last 15 years working within the asbestos sector, from a UK Trade Association to independent asbestos auditing, 14 years as the engine of our own asbestos training company & 6 years and co-founder of a representative organisation for asbestos training providers, IATP, as the Chair Person and communications officer for the organisation. My skills lie in communication, representation, social media, relationship building, networking, sourcing and effectively communicating relevant asbestos information. I have been working with ADAO since 2007 and share the vision and mission that “sharing makes us stronger & together change is possible.” We have come a long way, we still have a long way to go, the only cure we have at present is prevention, education & safe removal from our built environment. I am honoured to be part of the ADAO Prevention Asbestos Board and look forward to working with the team.

Claire Deacon Claire Deacon (South Africa Occupational Safety & Health) Claire Deacon, Managing Member of OCCUMED cc has practiced as an Occupational Health Practitioner

[OHN] since 1982. claire deacon and associates (cd&a) commenced in 2008. Claire obtained a General Nursing Diploma at Groote Schuur Hospital and qualified in Occupational Health at the University of Stellenbosch. She has completed various degrees: a B.Tech in Occupational Health at Peninsula Technikon; BSc Med [Honours] in Ergonomics at the University of Cape Town, and a Masters in Nursing [MCur] [by research] at the University of Port Elizabeth [UPE]. She is currently registered for a PhD Construction Management at NMMU. Claire has received her Professional Construction H&S Agent status with the SACPCMP (CHSA 010/2013), and serves as a Council member on the 4th term council, appointed by the Minister or Public Works.

John Newquist (US Occupational Safety & Health) is an independent safety trainer, author, and consultant. He has been interviewed for his safety expertise and OSHA insight by NPR, BNA, Safety + Health Magazine, Mother Jones, and several more. He works with numerous companies to address their OSHA and safety compliance needs. He has a BS in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a Masters of Science in Industrial Management from Northern Illinois University. He is a Certified Safety Professional. He has taught hundreds of safety seminars across the country including the National VPPPA, Construction Safety Conference, American Society of Safety Engineers, National Fire Protection Association, and numerous Building Trade Councils. He worked for OSHA from 1983-2012 and was also the Area Director of the Peoria Area Office. He currently teaches safety classes at the Construction Safety Council.

Tom Laubenthal photo Tom Laubenthal (US Training & Regulations) is the Training Supervisor & Technical Chief for The Environmental Institute in Marietta GA. He has more than 31 years of industry service and is considered a nationally recognized expert within the asbestos and lead-based paint control industries. He has worked as a Technical Expert for the NIST/NVLAP PLM laboratory accreditation program since 1988; held a variety of leadership roles including as a past National President of the Environmental Information Association; served on a variety of national-level professional association committees; and recently managed the complete revision of the EPA’s 1985 document “Guidance for Controlling Asbestos-Containing Materials in Buildings” known as the “EPA Purple Book.” He has served on EPA and NVLAP regulatory review panels, has published extensively in print and e-media, and is regularly invited to speak at technical meetings on topics of asbestos detection and control. He received his B.S. in Geology from Georgia State University.

Tony Rich Tony Rich has literally served ‘in the trenches’ as an industrial hygienist and environmental technician in the consulting field for the past 21 years, specializing in asbestos-related work, including: inspection surveys, abatement monitoring/sample analyses, project management, regulatory compliance, and worker training. He has also received microscopy training from McCrone Research Institute for identification of bulk asbestos via polarized-light microscopy (PLM). Through the course of his occupation and volunteer efforts, Tony has developed an extensive collection of asbestos-related photographs, product materials, artifacts, historical books, industry documents, film archives, and other related media which have been utilized in a multitude of applications for various organizations worldwide, including, but not limited to: product research, educational blogs and websites, informational presentations, corporate and governmental training programs, regulatory guidance documents, science and trade publications, university textbooks, museum exhibits, and even as legal evidence.

Mark Winter photo Mark Winter (UK Training and Regulations). I have spent most of my working life in South Africa and Australia within the construction sector and the asbestos removal sector, returning to the UK in 2000 and establishing my own Asbestos Training Company specialising in Licensed Asbestos Removal Training. My strengths lie in technical, legal, training/education and the practical application of asbestos removal, innovation and development of products that enhance and aid the asbestos, silica, and dust creating sectors. I spent six years as the Independent Asbestos Training Providers (IATP) Policy and Technical Director and have been part of the UK’s HSE’s Asbestos Liaison Unit that governs, legislates, and provides guidance for the asbestos sector in the UK.
