The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization is urging our community — both those suffering from an asbestos-related disease and their caretakers — to take every recommended precaution during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect yourself and your family from this devastating outbreak.

Dr. Arthur L. Frank, MD, PhD,  ADAO’s Science Advisory Board Co-Chair, emphasized that any patients diagnosed with asbestos-related illnesses must closely follow the precautions and guidelines set out by the Center for Disease Control.

He emphasized that asbestos-related disease patients may have severely compromised immune systems due to their illnesses. Medications necessary to treat your illness can weaken your ability to respond to the infection caused by the virus. And, if your lungs have been compromised by fibrosis, your ability to fight off the effects of the coronavirus may also be reduced.

Dr. Frank urges everyone, but especially these patients, to follow the CDC’s recommendations and:

  • Stay at home
  • Avoid contact with others than those in your immediate household unless absolutely necessary
  • Keep a safe distance from others when you must leave the house.

If you are older than 60, make extra effort to follow these guidelines until the threat has passed.

All of us at ADAO send you our best wishes for your continued health and safety. We are here for you as this continues, and please do not hesitate to reach out. While we practice physical  distancing, we can still be here for each other mentally and socially.

In Unity
