2 Dr. Barry Castleman and Dr. Raffaele Guariniello On December 4, 2015, Dr. Barry Castleman met legendary Turin prosecutor Dr. Raffaele Guariniello in his office.

Guariniello, is about to turn 75 and will retire at the end of this month, having pursued 30,000 prosecutions in his career including criminal cases against corporate officials, executives and owners of enterprises where workers were inadequately protected and developed mesothelioma working at Eternit, Pirelli, Montefibre, Michelin, and other cases charging negligent manslaughter such as Thyssen Krupp in the steel industry. Guariniello’s work against corporations such as Eternit are critical in curtailing the power of the asbestos industry. In the battle against Eternit powerful corporate executives were tried and  held accountable for human, social, and environmental rights violations – one of the biggest and rarest victories in the battle against the asbestos industry. Truly Guariniello’s work is activism and social justice at its finest.

Guariniello led the prosecution against Swiss billionaire asbestos magnate Stephan Schmidheiny in the environmental disaster case where long jail sentences were overturned based on legal technicalities in November 2014.  A murder trial is pending a ruling to proceed, and this case may proceed to trial in the middle of 2016.

Dr. Castleman is shown presenting Prosecutor Guariniello with an award from ADAO for Special Recognition for Prosecution of Toxic Corporate Crime, the first such honor of its kind. May it not be the last.

Prosecutor Guariniello, congratulations from all of us at ADAO.
