We have been touched by asbestos in individual ways, yet we are joined together by a bond of community. As a testament to the strength of our global family, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is highlighting the courageous stories of our members with the “Share Your Story” feature on our website.

This week, we would like to honor the story of Karen, as shared by her husband, Geoff, who is a part of our ADAO family.

We encourage you to submit your personal stories by clicking here and following the simple instructions on the page. In sharing, comes healing. Remember, you are not alone.

“Fighting Every Minute of Every Day” – Karen’s Story

Name: Karen

Location: Massachusetts

Year of Birth: 1974

Date of Diagnosis: 01-JAN-2004

Diagnosis: Mesothelioma

How has asbestos changed your life?

Before mesothelioma my wife was a healthy and vibrant 29 year old woman. Now she sleeps on a vent and has a trach. She cannot drive. She is on permanent disability. Breathing is difficult for her. It is a chore for her just to bend down. Asbestos has taken a lot from her but her spirit remains. She fights every minute of every day not to let this horrific disease get the best of her.
