EIA Purple BookThe Environmental Information Association (EIA) announces the availability of its revision to the US EPA’s 1985 document “Guidance for Controlling Asbestos-Containing Materials in Buildings” (EPA 560/5-85-024, affectionately known as the “Purple Book” because of the color of its cover.

EIA’s revision to the original EPA Purple Book is entitled Managing Asbestos in Buildings: A Guide for Owners and Managers.” The revision project was based upon a realized need by both EPA and EIA to update the topics, regulatory references and medical information that was contained in EPA’s 1985 Purple Book.

EIA’s “Managing Asbestos in Buildings: A Guide for Owners and Managers” is the authoritative source for information on basic asbestos issues faced by industry. There is no other guidance available in the industry that provides the depth of coverage and guidance for building owners and managers. It is a complete manual for understanding, identifying, assessing, managing and abating asbestos in buildings. This publication was written, reviewed, edited and prepared by an all-star line-up of asbestos control industry experts and medical experts that were brought together as a volunteer effort by EIA to prepare a much-needed update to the Purple Book. EIA’s “Managing Asbestos in Buildings” is a consensus document authored and peer-reviewed by industry experts in order to provide technically accurate and up-to-date information regarding asbestos in buildings to those persons that are looking for the very latest in information regarding federal regulations and recommendations for identifying and managing asbestos.

“Managing Asbestos in Buildings” is a volunteer effort of the Environmental Information Association.  The project began under the direction of EPA, but has not been funded by EPA or any other source.  It is a complete volunteer effort by the leaders of the asbestos control industry to serve those in need of the best information available.
