UPDATE: (posted on September 3, 2012) China’s biggest car exporter, Chery Automobile Co., is widening a vehicle recall in Australia after discovering asbestos parts in models exported to five additional countries. Chery will recall 18,875 vehicles in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina and Singapore.
MESSAGE FROM ADAO: (posted on August 15, 2012) Australia has banned asbestos.Nonetheless, products containing asbestos cross Australian borders. About23,000 cars imported from China were recalled due to the discovery of asbestosin the engine and exhaust gaskets. If over 20,000 cars containing asbestoscrossed Australia’s borders despite their ban on asbestos, we can only imaginehow many asbestos products are imported to the U.S.
The World Health Organization (WHO) andInternational Labor Organization (ILO) agree: asbestos is a human carcinogenand there is no safe level of asbestos exposure. Despite these irrefutablefacts, asbestos has not been banned in the United States or Canada. Just lastweek, the USGS reported, in 2011 the asbestos consumption in the USA increased 13%.

Parts mistake blamed
“Shang Yugui, a spokesman at Great Wall, the biggest maker of SUVs and pickups in China, said the company became aware of the issue about a month ago, then stopped using the parts in question. The components were in some vehicles sold in China and overseas markets, he said.
“We will actively proceed with the recall,” he said. “The incident won’t have much impact on our export and overseas expansion plans. Workers at Chery mistakenly used a batch of parts that wasn’t supposed to be used in cars exported to Australia, spokesman Huang Huaqiong said. The company selects parts in line with government policies, he said.”
Ateco Automotive, the Chinese carmakers’ distributor in Australia, had received written assurances from the two manufacturers that no parts of the vehicles contained asbestos before imports began from Great Wall in 2009 and Chery in 2011, Daniel Cotterill, a public affairs official, said in Sydney.”

SNAPSHOT VIEW OF CHERY AUTOMOBILE Co., Ltd.
“Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. was founded in 1997 by five of Anhui’s local state owned investment companies with an initial capitalization of RMB 3.2 billion. Plant construction commenced on March 18, 1997 in Wuhu, Anhui Province, China. The first car came off the production line on December 18, 1999. And on August 22, 2007, the one-millionth car of Chery rolled out the assembly line successfully, which signifies that Chery has already achieved its first-stage goal in the process of building a successful independent Chinese brand, and is now on its way to create a world famous brand through opening and innovation.” Read More. Some 23,000 cheap Chinese-made cars were Wednesday recalled in Australia after asbestos was found in their engines, with unions demanding to know how they came to be in the country.Importer Ateco Automotive instructed all Chery and Great Wall dealers to stop selling affected vehicles, with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) closely watching developments. The asbestos was found bound in gaskets in the engine and exhaust systems.“Asbestos is a prohibited hazardous substance and these engines and exhaust systems should only be worked on by qualified personnel using appropriate safety procedures,” said ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard.“The ACCC will monitor the recall, and Workplace Health and Safety authorities will monitor the workplace safety issues.”The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) said it was unacceptable that the cars were allowed into Australia, which has banned the importation or use of asbestos since 2004.“Asbestos kills people, it’s that simple. It should not be in homes, construction material or cars,” national secretary Paul Bastian said in a statement.“If companies cannot guarantee that they do not have deadly substances in their vehicles, then simply they should not be able to import their products.“We call on prosecutions to be served on anyone who imports asbestos into Australia.”The ACCC said customs officers detected the asbestos, which triggered a safety investigation that led to the cars being recalled.Prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious illnesses, including malignant lung cancer.Rickard said the automotive industry was experienced in managing the asbestos risk.“The automotive service industry is experienced in managing this risk, as cars sold in Australia before 2004 often had gaskets that contained asbestos,” she said.“However, consumers and automotive repairers must be made aware that the risk may be present in these much newer vehicles.” MY FEAR IS THAT ONE USELESS NIGERIAN WILL GO AND IMPORT THESE REJECTED CARS INTO THIS COUNTRY. PLEASE LETS SAVE OUR NATION!Michael Onya Okpani
