The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) mourns the passing of Matt Peacock, an extraordinary journalist, advocate, and dear friend, who left us on October 30, 2024, at the age of 72. For over 40 years, Matt dedicated his career to fearless investigative journalism, primarily with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). He began as a current affairs television researcher and soon became a pioneering reporter with the ABC Radio Science Unit, where he produced the groundbreaking series Asbestos: Work as a Health Hazard, one of the first to expose the profound dangers of asbestos.

Throughout his remarkable career, Matt contributed to a wide range of ABC radio and television programs, including as chief political correspondent in Canberra, and held postings in Washington, New York, and London. He also brought attention to Indigenous affairs while working in Australia’s Northern Territory, co-founding an Aboriginal video production house that empowered Indigenous voices.

In addition to his broadcast journalism, Matt served as an Adjunct Professor of Journalism at Sydney’s University of Technology (UTS) and authored numerous articles. His seminal book, Killer Company, detailed the tragic history of Australia’s largest asbestos manufacturer. This vital work inspired the 2012 ABC miniseries Devil’s Dust, a powerful dramatization of Matt’s fearless reporting.

As the keynote speaker at ADAO’s 2012 conference, Matt spoke passionately about his experiences and insights from Killer Company: James Hardie Exposed. His work was instrumental in shedding light on corporate malfeasance and advocating for the countless individuals affected by asbestos-related diseases. Loved and respected by all who knew him, Matt was a cherished ally in the fight for justice, inspiring all who strive to protect public health and hold powerful entities accountable.

The world has lost a courageous journalist and a powerful voice for truth. ADAO extends our deepest condolences to Matt’s family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy will continue to guide and inspire our mission to end the suffering caused by asbestos.

Matt, you changed our lives forever. I will deeply miss you as we fight on to ban asbestos.
