The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) Unveils Earl Dotter’s 2024 AAPC Poster: “BADGES OF PAIN || VOICES FOR CHANGE”
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is thrilled to unveil its 2024 poster, designed by the renowned photographer Earl Dotter, for the 20th Anniversary Asbestos Awareness and Prevention Conference (AAPC). Titled “BADGES OF PAIN || VOICES FOR CHANGE,” this poster poignantly represents our ongoing fight against asbestos-related diseases and our relentless push for policy reform.
Earl Dotter, the photojournalist behind this poster, has a long history of capturing the human side of occupational and environmental health issues. His work continues to inspire and mobilize communities toward meaningful change. Dotter’s 2024 poster continues our tradition of blending Art, Advocacy, and Action to amplify our mission of preventing asbestos exposure and eliminating asbestos-caused diseases worldwide.
This year’s poster, the ninth in the BADGES series, holds profound significance. It reflects the voices and stories of those who choose hope in the face of fear, those affected by asbestos who continue to champion change.
Protests and Vigils
The poster prominently features demonstrators at the Washington Monument holding signs with messages like “Asbestos Kills,” “Ban Asbestos Now,” and “Asbestos is Murder.” These visuals capture the raw emotion and determination of our community and are a testament to the collective effort and unwavering resolve of those fighting for a world free from the dangers of asbestos.
Legislative Action
Photos of congressional testimonies and public health panels highlight the critical intersection of advocacy and policy. These images underscore the importance of legislative support and the ongoing battle to enact and enforce laws that protect public health from asbestos exposure.
Memorials and Tributes
The heart of this poster lies in the personal stories and memorials. Tributes to victims like Mike Mattmuller and Alan Reinstein, whose legacy fuels our drive to eliminate asbestos-caused diseases, are powerful reminders of the devastating impact of asbestos on families and the necessity of our work.
Voices for Change
Pat Morrison, representing the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), symbolizes the occupational hazards first responders face. Our NYC Times Square billboard campaign, featuring the bold message “Ban Asbestos Now,” demonstrates the national reach and visibility of our cause.
A Call to Action
The “BADGES OF PAIN || VOICES FOR CHANGE” poster is more than just a visual display; it is a call to action. It serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and affected by asbestos, the ongoing fight for justice, and the collective strength of our community. This year’s AAPC poster is a tribute to the advocates, victims, and allies who tirelessly work towards a world without asbestos.
As we reflect on the past and look toward the future, let this poster inspire us to continue our mission with renewed vigor and determination. Together, we can make a difference, champion change, and shape policy.
Earl, ADAO is deeply grateful for your nine “BADGES” posters and your unwavering dedication to capturing the tragic impact of asbestos and the ongoing fight to ban it.
In unity,
Linda Reinstein
