As we begin Global Asbestos Awareness Week (April 1–7, 2026), asbestos remains a global public health threat. More than 200,000 people die each year from asbestos-related diseases, and legacy asbestos in homes, schools, and workplaces continues to pose serious risks, especially after being disturbed through wildfires, hurricanes, floods, and storms that can release toxic fibers. Prevention remains the most effective way to save lives.

Asbestos is a known human carcinogen with no safe level of exposure, yet it is also commonly found in older homes, schools, and workplaces. Preventing asbestos exposure is critical to reducing disease risk.

#2026GAAW Focus:

  • Ban asbestos use
  • Prevent exposure
  • Strengthen enforcement
  • Build global partnerships

5 Asbestos Safety Tips

  • Be Asbestos Aware – Get a professional inspection if in doubt.
  • Do Not Disturb the Dust – Avoid disturbing suspected materials.
  • Hire Certified Professionals – Use trained experts only.
  • Follow Safety Regulations – Adhere to EPA and OSHA guidelines.
  • Protect Yourself – Use proper protective equipment.

What should you do if you suspect asbestos? Do not disturb it and contact a certified professional for inspection.
