🕯 DAY SEVEN – April 7, 2025: Candlelight Vigil to Honor and Remember Asbestos Victims Worldwide
2025 Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW)
On this final day of Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW), we gather in a global Candlelight Vigil to honor and remember the lives forever changed—and too often cut short—by asbestos-related diseases.
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) dedicates this day to Remembering Mavis Nye, Extraordinary Friend and Mesothelioma Warrior from the United Kingdom. Mavis’ 14-year journey with mesothelioma, supported every step of the way by her devoted husband Ray, became a beacon of hope for thousands. Her words,
“I fight on for all our Meso Warriors past, present, and future,”
remain a powerful call to action and a lasting tribute to her indomitable spirit. Her story continues to inspire and is available online for all to read and share.
Today, we are proud to release the 2025 Mesothelioma Warrior Video—a moving tribute featuring nearly 300 heartfelt dedications. This powerful piece honors the courage of our global community. We extend our deepest gratitude to the families who shared their stories—and to Jordan Zevon, who generously allowed us to feature “Keep Me in Your Heart” by Warren Zevon, adding a profound emotional layer to this year’s remembrance.
But this day is about more than reflection—it is a recommitment to action. As Professor Kevin Bampton of the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) reminds us: “The WHO estimates that twice as many people will die as a result of the asbestos industry as from uncontrolled climate change.”
This sobering truth underscores the global scale of the crisis and the urgent need for stronger prevention policies and protections.
We are proud to stand with our Partner for Prevention, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN). Their leadership in cancer prevention policy and community health strengthens our movement and helps extend the reach of our shared advocacy.
This year, our outreach expanded to include Arabic and Ukrainian translations, recognizing the enduring public health threats in conflict zones where asbestos lingers in buildings and debris. Today, we share a Ukrainian-translated press release and PSA video, further broadening our message of prevention through education.
#2025GAAW Day Seven Call to Action: Light a candle in honor and memory of asbestos victims.
As GAAW 2025 comes to a close, may each candle lit today stand as a symbol of remembrance—and a promise:
To prevent exposure.
To protect future generations.
To eliminate all asbestos-caused diseases.
Together, we honor. Together, we act.
