Action Mesothelioma Day 2025: ADAO Stands with UK Mesothelioma Warriors for Prevention and a Cure

On Wednesday, July 2, the London Asbestos Support Awareness Group (LASAG) will host their Action Mesothelioma Day (AMD) event at City Hall inLondon. This powerful gathering brings together advocates, patients, scientists, and lawmakers to raise awareness, honor lives lost, and drive urgent action for prevention and policy change.

On behalf of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), I am deeply honored to be speaking at this year’s London AMD 2025 event alongside distinguished speakers, including John Glen MP, Crispin Hiley (HITTMESO Trial), and Emmanouil Karteris (Early Detection). Together, we will share stories, science, and strategies to eliminate mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases around the world.

The program will also feature uplifting music by the London Rock Choir, a performance by The Kings Magician, Etienne Pradier, and meaningful time for reflection, community building, and remembrance.

Asbestos: A Global Crisis Demanding Unified Action

On July 4th, formal AMD events will take place in the United Kingdom as they continue to bear one of the world’s highest per capita rates of mesothelioma: A tragic testament to decades of asbestos exposure. But this crisis extends far beyond UK borders. Asbestos kills globally, remaining the leading cause of occupational cancer worldwide and claiming more than 200,000 lives each year, according to the Global Burden of Disease study.

In both the United Kingdom and the United States, tens of thousands of lives have been lost to asbestos-caused diseases, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, laryngeal cancer, and asbestosis. Without a comprehensive ban in the United States, we can expect that 40,000 people will continue to die each year from preventable asbestos-caused illness. This is why we must work together across the Atlantic to limit exposure in the US and the UK.

The latest data from the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reveals the devastating scope:

  • There were 2,257 mesothelioma deaths in Great Britain in 2022.
  • This is slightly lower than the 2290 deaths in 2021.
  • The average of 2,529 deaths per year over the 8 years from 2012 to 2020.

Across the UK, Action Mesothelioma Day events feature powerful memorials, educational sessions, and moments of reflection. Many communities release doves as symbolic tributes to those who have suffered from this entirely preventable tragedy.

As we gather in London and unite in spirit around the globe, we remember those we’ve lost, support those still fighting, and recommit ourselves to preventing future harm. I will be lighting a candle for my late husband Alan, and for the countless courageous voices who have transformed their pain into power by advocating for a world free from asbestos.
