ASBESTOS GROUP RESPONDS TO JOHNSON & JOHNSON DECISION TO DISCONTINUE SALE OF TALCUM POWDER AFTER ASBESTOS CONTAMINATION LEGAL CASES MOUNT

WASHINGTON, DC–Linda Reinstein, president of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization, the largest asbestos-victim advocacy organization, and Jacqueline M Moline, MD, MSc, Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization Science Advisory Board Member released the following statements today in response to Johnson & Johnson’s decision to end the sale of talc-based baby powder in North America

Linda Reinstein:

“Americans should be able to trust they are safe from asbestos. Johnson & Johnson spent decades misleading the public to think their often asbestos-contaminate baby powder was safe when they knew it was not. Today’s announcement that they will stop selling this potentially deadly product is a victory for public health. A small and influential group of chemical companies in America still rely on asbestos and have stood in the way of a national ban of this deadly substance. We can’t wait for them to follow J&J and see the error of their ways. Congress must pass the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act (ARBAN) and ban asbestos once and for all.”

Jacqueline M Moline, MD, MSC

“This is a tremendous victory for public health. The lives of countless people will be saved by Johnson and Johnson’s decision to stop selling talcum powder. Safer alternatives are available and have been available for decades. The dangerous legacy of asbestos for millions of users will cease moving forward, but does not negate the ill effects of needless exposure to so many in the past.”
